So, I had better explain, this looks nothing like the spec I gave at the start of this thread. The myrtle and the douglas fir were too small to use for this project, so I have now gone for European spruce top and bubinga back and sides. I let Brook pick out the wood, and I am very pleased with the looks of that bubinga Trim will have a theme of black and red. If you look through the news section there have been a couple of guitars with this kind of binding and rosette, and I think it looks lovely. Tuners will be Schaller da vinci, pearl. Strings will probably be nylon tape wound La Bellas. I see now they have brought out a set which have copper cores and clear wraps, so they look for all the world like normal phosphor bronze. But I still may plump for the black ones. With nylon coated strings I may just be able to keep may nails (maybe a little shorter) Robbie

Will probably be a bit of a gap before any more progress is made as the tuners I have requested (Da Vinci bass tuners by scholar) are going to take 6 weeks. That means Brook won't be able to do any more work on the headstock, and so it won't be going to the spraying booth until that is done. My guess is probably a February pickup time.

Robbie Have you ordered the Schaller Tuners already? I read on Delcamp they are a bit behind with their orders, as they've recently brought a new line GrandTune for nylon strings. If you've not ordered them already, I recommend giving Touchstone Tonewoods a call, they distribute Schaller and seem to have the best prices as well.

Thanks Shubbs. I'm not sure where Brook have ordered them to be honest, but I will mention Touchstone to them. They are good looking tuners I must say, though whether they are any better than the ubiquitous Gotohs or hipshots is another matter.

Just realised looking at the date of this first post that it has been just about exactly a year since visiting Brook and coming back with this idea for my bass. Well, I am going down again this Friday with a few friends, not to pick it up yet, it is still a few weeks away, but I will have chance to take some pictures of it in the spray booth.
I will of course post an update when I get back at the weekend. I reckon there is about 3 to 4 more weeks to go with this bass, and I am getting VERY excited.

That looks great @robbiej and those tuners and headstock inlay set it off very nicely. Look forward to the finish going on Phil

Thanks guys. Just a few more details- I hadn't realised they were going to make a walnut neck, though remember having a discussion about the possibilities. I am really pleased with how the walnut has turned out. It looks amazing against the bubinga. The laminate strip is bubinga.
The tuners, in case you hadn't caught previous posts, are wonderful Schaller da Vincis, very nice, and extremely well engineered. Well worth delaying the build for for a coup,e of months.
And if you hadn't of noticed, it is now a fretted instrument. I had been having many thoughts about the pros and cons of fret less, and even now I'm thinking that if I don't get on with frets I can at least remove them and have red lines inlaid to tie in with the rosette.
Pickup will be a headway acoustic bass model.
