In 2013 Martin kindly allowed me to use the forum for a Young Acoustic Guitar Musicians Competition, with the prize of a De Faoite handmade guitar and the aim being to help talented young performing musicians develop their careers and to help grow the Acoustic Soundboard Forum membership and get more participants of a different age and outlook to the current core. The 2013 competition produced a wide range of talented entrants and was won by James Daubney who has gone on to develop his career making and sharing great music with us along the way.
Domestic issues meant that I couldn’t repeat the competition last year but I’m keen to keep it going again this year and Martin has again kindly allowed me to use the Acoustic Soundboard Forum as the platform.
Entrants have to be under 25 years old, resident in the UK and pursuing or about to pursue a career in making music using an acoustic guitar either solo or in a group. To enter the competition you need to sign up as an Acoustic Soundboard member and make a post in the Competitions section of the forum with title "YAGMC 2015- Your Name" with:
• links to videos/soundtracks representative of your music
• tell the Forum about you/your group with your history, plans and gigs etc
• outline why you want to be professional a musicians and why/how “Samhradh” would help you
Martin will then set up your own individual thread where you can post more music and information as the competition progresses. This is your thread where only you can post. There will also be a general Competition Comments thread where Forum members can comment and ask questions and entrants can respond there.
There are three main requirements for entrants:
• They must be young and have recently embarked on or are about embark on a musical career.
• An acoustic guitar must be a central part of your music career.
• You must have enough talent, ability, determination and stamina to fight against the odds to make it in the grinding world of music. My guitar should also help in this and develop your career making music in ways that keep me happy and reflect back on my instruments.
Beyond that I would want to impose very few constraints - I want it to be open to any genre of music and want to see your ideas and talent unhindered. Self compositions would be nice but again not essential. If you win the Competition you also agree to keep being active Acoustic Soundboard member and keep us up to date as your career progresses. The competition is open to entrants now and at the end of July 2015 it will be narrowed down to three finalists with a winner chosen at the end of August 2015.
The prize guitar is the same model used for the first competition - “Samhradh”, the Gaelic for summer pronounced Sow-roo or Sow-rah, which is a short scale (630mm) 13 frets clear of the body Grand Concert sized guitar with a Florentine cutaway. It will have a Lutz spruce top and American Black Walnut back, sides and neck. The guitar comes with a Hiscox Pro II hardcase and will be fitted with a clear mylar pickguard that matches the playing style of the winner and also with a K&K Pure Mini Western pickup. Here’s the 2013 “Samhradh” guitar that James won:
The 2015 “Samhradh” will be made between now and the end of August and I will make a thread on the Forum with a photo documentary covering its construction.
I’m looking forward to another great competition and would ask Forum members to help spread the word to potential entrants.
