A while ago I bought an Epiphone inspired by 1964 texan as a bit of mess around/modification guitar, when I got it the thing that stood out was the horrible orange 'vintage toner' it looked nasty and cheap, however I tuned it up and found it was a great bluesy guitar, it is built like a tank but the colour really put me off. The first call of action was to replace the pickup, I don't like undersaddle pickups so I switched it out at first for an LR Baggs as I tend to use them in my guitars. At first I dulled the finish with wire wool to try and improve the looks, that didn't work so I refinished the guitar I am now just waiting for a new bone nut and saddle to arrive and deciding what pickup to put in it, I've bought a Lawrence A300 soundhole pickup which I might use.

Nice project Alex - looking good so far - what did you use to refinish, and did you do just the top, or the whole body? Keith. PS Redundant "out". But then you're way too young to be a curmudgeonly old git.

I used a Polyurethane satin finish from a can, I only fully stripped the top, the back and sides were sanded down slightly then oversprayed.
It was all a bit of a project to see if I can destroy the warranty, I think I succeeded

Impressive.
How did you take off the original finish in the rosette?

Impressive. How did you take off the original finish in the rosette? I didn't, I just scraped and sanded the whole top and hoped the rosette wasn't a decal

The finished product, with probably the best saddle I've made yet

That's a very impressive job!
Has your work affected the tone of the guitar?

That's a very impressive job! Has your work affected the tone of the guitar? Not when it's braced with 2x4's

I didn't like the fact that this guitar looked very good but sounded boxy and dead due to the heavy bracing, so basically .... this all used to be bracing. sounds much better now!

Okay, I'll bite Did you do these alterations yourself, Alex? If so, how did you know where and how much to take off, presuming you didn't remove the top first?
