Great stuff, Martin!
What a wonderful gift.
If I was still in Glasgow I'd be on that course too.

I is well-impressed, gaffer!
It all looks horribly difficult - and I'm sure I'd have somebody's eye out with those tension rod things, not to mention having to learn to play like Django if I had to operate a band-saw..
Really looking forward to seeing how this goes. Best of luck to you!

Yesterday went quite well, but was very stressful! This was the carve/profile braces day, and I can't say it was my favourite part. Maybe if I had time to become familiar with using a chisel, this would have helped, but as it was I was nervous throughout. Anyway, I got through it without any major injuries and made some decent progress... First up for the day was gluing the ebony headstock veneer on. The neck had been made up prior to the course starting, which I wasn't too bothered about as I was having a lot of trouble with some easy stuff anyway. It has a stacked heel and a scarf neck joint, all mahogany. I liked this 'cos it was easy Lots of nice 'squeezeout'

Here are all the bits of the box, ready to be glued together... First the back is glued to the sides.

Before walloping the top on, I got to sign it on the underside. Pretentious? Moi? Then the top is firmly closed and glued/taped onto the rim, completing the body for now.

The tape is there to apply pressure to ensure squeezeout and a good glue joint. I had a crafty look inside, and it looks ok - cleaned it up the best I could

Now back to the neck - the veneer is solidly glued to the headstock. A centre line is drawn down the neck.

Using a template, the headstock shape is drawn onto the veneer. And the neck outline is also drawn in. This tenor uke will have a 40mm nut.

Really impressed: power tools, jargon ("squeezeout"!), sharp implements and a proper woodworking apron.
Of course, it is the beard that has made it all possible. If you were only to get some industrial dungarees, you could start building a banjo...
Looking forward to seeing the uke at Halifax.
Brian
