Thanks for looking chaps - it really is great fun, and it's brilliant chatting to these guys all day as well. Ricky and Ian (Claffey Guitars) are going to the London Acoustic Show in September with their guitars, so if anyone's going, make sure to say hello I've told them that the build is being documented on here, and given them cards so they can look in (maybe even join up some time!). I've also mentioned that the ukulele will be coming to Halifax this year, and will have to stand up to the expert scrutiny of loads of folk from here, so the pressure's on There also may be the possibility of a Meet the Maker interview coming from this

As you were Martin Yes, clenched is good - helps prevent unwanted "squeezeout".... Keith

Cheers for the clenching advice I'm not sure, but I suspect the routing may be beyond our fledgling abilities, and expert assistance will be necessary...

Day Three yesterday went well, although the entire day was spent solely on the neck! Yes, it was neck carving day! We didn't so much as touch the uke bodies, other than to admire the very nice, new binding that the elves must have installed while we were at the day job Things are laid out for beginning the work, including a dangerous looking draw knife! I stuck with the DBF (Dirty Big File or rasp). A start is made, and already it's looking promising... An action shot, complete with red apron

The neck is nicely rounded, almost as if I'd meant to do it like that. Carving knife for the volute! Ouch! Just a wee bit more...

Back to work, and the heel's getting there (I think!). The fruit of my labours so far today... A bit more filing/sanding, and it's pretty much done for now (until the fingerboard is fitted).

Cut the fret wire to size (roughly), hammer it in carefully (sharp raps as opposed to tapping it in), check it's not squint (pull it if it is) and snip off as much of the edges as I can. Easy. The final stage today was to file down the fret ends until they were flush, then using a little rosewood dust and glue, seal and re-file the ends. And that was today, leaving us just one more day to join the fretboard to the neck, the neck to the body and do all the other bits and pieces, such as bridge, nut, tuners and finish (this may take some follow-up visits to finalise).
