As promised - I've now got a tutor line up for the event next year. Sadly Ian Stephenson can't be with us due to a family commitment but hopefully the list of tutors will tempt you anyway. 1st - 3rd July 2016 Halsway Annual Guitar Gathering "Hosted by Gavin Davenport (Albion Band, Morris On, Crucible etc.) we present a residential guitar weekend with Sam Carter (solo, False Lights), Sarah McQuaid (acclaimed singer/songwriter and author of the Irish DADGAD guitar book) and Tristan Seume (Jackie Oates, Guitarist columnist and more). This will be a chance to stretch your skills, get some new inspiration, explore tunings, song accompaniment melody playing and more. Courses will include exploration of double course instruments (mandola, bouzouki, cittern etc), and luthier Kai Toenjes who gave his time last year will be joining us for set ups and questions on instrument making, with more to be announced. Chances to jam, network and a tutor concert as well... More detail and better written waffle when I get there, and am already looking at booking tutors for 2017. If you want a good idea of where we are and what we do then well worth reading Keith'( ocarolan)s review of our event with Ben Walker earlier this year. Prices will be from £220 single ensuite, full board with all tuition, with reduced rates for shared or non ensuite rooms, camping and camper vans welcome - not on our website yet but you can book via phone on 01984618274

Excellent, and good luck with it Gav! It's unlikely I'll manage as I think I'm on holiday at the beginning of July, but I'd love to attend.

Are you in a position to give more details of what will be going on yet gavdav. I assume at some point we will have to choose what we want to do due to things running concurrently or is that not the case? Just thinking ahead now Cheers Phil

Apologies on the delay in responding. I no longer work at Halsway following my move to Liverpool, BUT I will be returning to host the guitar weekend. I will gather details from the individual tutors this week and feed them back here and to those who've already booked via Halsway. I hear accommodation is going pretty quickly. Looking forward to visiting again!!

Very brief blurb from tutors received (some more detialed than others!!) but it's going to be generally pretty ace. as well as this stuff, there'll be chances to jam/drink/walk all weekend, a tutors concert on Saturday night and I'm happy to run sessions or workshops on cittern/bouzouki type beasts and Kai Toenjes will be on hand to talk and aid in setups and showcase instruments, the splendid Dave White of this parish will also be showing some of his splendid sounding wares as well. More stringy goodness than you can shake a stick at. Tristan Seume: Looking into tunes and accompaniment playing in CGDGCD – supporting a wide range of abilities from intermediate to expert and helping you find your own voice in a versatile but less widely used tuning. We will look at movable chord shapes, using drones and arranging traditional tunes while implying harmony and chord substitution. This will be taught by ear to avoid losing the group to burying their heads in sheet music but dots available. Sarah McQuaid First Session generally for newcomers to DADGAD, fresh ideas for chords, chord progressions, alternative voicings, and using DADGAD to play in other keys besides the obvious D. Plus a general introduction to the tuning, an explanation of its advantages, and an overview of the various modes (Mixolydian, Dorian, etc.) to which DADGAD is particularly suited. We’ll learn a song that I like to use as an example, as it’s in the key of A (not D!) and uses some of Sarah’s favourite chord shapes and transitions. A mid-session break can be used to practise that song (handouts with chord diagrams for the song and tab for an instrumental break will be provided) or, for experienced DADGAD players, to experiment with alternative chords and keys for songs they’ve already been playing. Next session will be pushing the boundaries of DADGAD. For the benefit of those with short memories and anyone who didn’t attend the morning session, there’ll be a quick review of what we learned earlier, after which we’ll start the session proper by taking a well-known folk song and moving from very basic to more jazzified chord progressions to give the song a different feel. By way of an illustration of DADGAD’s applicability to other musical styles and genres, we’ll learn a blues song and possibly an old Doris Day number. Once again, break time can be used either to practise what we’ve just learned (using supplied handouts) or to work on applying the same concepts to other material; and once again, the break will be followed by a demonstration and group run-through with solo instrumental breaks for the brave. On final morning, we’ll start with a brief review, and then we’ll delve further into how we can make things more interesting for both ourselves and our listeners. We’ll take another song as an example, first looking at alternative chordal backings for each section of the song, then playing the song in four different keys while using the capo in order to be able to continue singing it in the key of A – i.e. we can play it in the key of A with no capo, in the key of G with the capo on the second fret, in the key of E with the capo on the fifth fret, and finally in the key of D with the capo on the seventh fret, and the song will still be in A. Handouts will be provided showing chord diagrams and sample instrumental break tablature for each key/capo position. Before the break, I’ll also provide handouts showing chord diagrams, melody tablature and harmony tablature for a traditional Irish jig, which we can try playing together towards the end. Participants will have the option of focusing on backing, melody, harmony or all three, depending on their level of ability. Sam Carter: Will be looking at 'English fingerstyle guitar', picking out the techniques and tunings that typify the style, talking about particularly important players and their individual styles etc. Sam will probably teach an arrangement or two of his own and may do the final session teaching some of Nic Jones' Canadee-i-o as a real exemplar of the style. more detials and booking info via www.halswaymanor.org.uk
