Hi,
Following on from the recent 'memory loss' thread for remembering songs, I've been toying for some time with looking at a tablet device for displaying song lyrics. I'm sure (as I've seen them) many professional players use these as an aid, for both lyrics and set lists etc. My lyrics book needs a JCB to carry around the whole thing now.
The market leader seems to point as usual to iPad but frankly I just don't want to fork out around £400 (or more) for this; I'm pretty sure the smaller screen versions would be too small for me; (add memory loss AND eyesight!!). I guess 10" display screen is smallest I need? Software does not need to be all singing all dancing (no pun intended) but clear display and steady scrolling will be important.
Does this therefore push me into an Android tablet (to which I have no basic objection).
Is anyone using one for this; successfully?
what make and size?
and what software do you use for song organisation and display.
I think gadgets to attach to music/mike stands are now readily available.
Any good advice on the subject welcome.
Regards
John

I've been using a cheap 10" Lenovo A10 tablet for about 6 months now and it is so much better than lugging around lots of paperwork. I wouldn't go smaller than 10" and if there was a cheaper larger option I'd take that I think. I use Google Drive and it works for my purposes. I've recently been given a tablet stand which has replaced my rickety old music stand and it keeps the tablet secure. One bonus of using a tablet over paper is that you don't need a separate light. I go to a couple of uke clubs and tablets are becoming an increasingly common sight there and I don't know anybody who has tried the tablet then gone back to paper.
Hope that helps.

Helps a lot thanks; in fact the Lenova tablet is one I've got marked as a possibility at about £120. Forgive my ignorance on some of the software bits. I don't use google drive which I thought was just a cloud based file bucket (??) so these may be the wrong questions.
Are your lyrics stored as word docs? on the hard drive of the tablet? are they simply a list of files in a folder or in some from of database; and how do you scroll down the lyrics at the right speed, or are they just fixed pages?
Hope you don't mind me asking. I've seen software like Stage Prompt on the web which seems to do the database/scrolling job (plus other things) but its £30-50.
Regards again
John

I've just had a quick look at this and at first glance it looks excellent for what I want. Not sure if there is a scroll facility. But I might try a download onto my laptop and see it in more detail.
Great info thanks

I'm a bit of a computer doofus so can't give anything but basic answers, but if I can use a tablet like this anyone can. I download PDF or word docs to Google Drive which comes pre installed (I think) I then make separate folders for different playlists. The documents can be saved in off line mode for access when there is no connectivity. They open in page view so there is no scrolling facility, which is only an issue when the song extends over more than 1 page.

Wish I could help - my knowledge of tablets extends as far as the ones I take each morning for my blood pressure. I do have a tablet gadget which gathers dust - trying to use it just raises the blood pressure that the other tablets are trying to keep down! Mark

I'll have a think about it but it seems a relatively simple route to start with (and possibly end with as well).

Lyric pad is an app that works on android and it only costs about £4. It's brilliant and you can even download the songs and cords.

Thanks again for all your useful comments. Following various bits of advice Santa is now bringing me a Lenovo android 10" tablet. I've had a quick look at various software items and so far though that Setlist Helper looked good but I'll add Lyric Pad to the possibles. I don't need a lot of fancy stuff like backing tracks.
Thanks again
John
