Taken the top, back and sides to near final thickness' and cut oversized outlines today. Grain on the back was a touch awkward in places but the yew sides planed up very easily. Top I've taken to 3mm at the mo but will take this down a little further before joining the two halves together. Also prepared some mahogany for the linings and need to set up the bandsaw to cut the kerf's tomorrow.
I've been using mahogany for my back bracing on the guitars - not sure whether to do the same on this or stick with spruce?

Layout of the top bracing (ink lines) and back bracing in pencil Top bracing shaped on undersides to a 10 foot radii ready to fix to the soundboard - once I've done the rosette... Former is 2 x 1/16th inch pieces of marine ply bonded together and bonded to 4 10 foot radii cross ribs to form the cylindrical form of the soundboard Francis

Didn't know you could get ply that thin. (Make a mental note for future use).
Neat work, Francis. These non-guitars are all a mystery to me - well, even more of a mystery!

Rosette assembled today using my new (homemade) circle cutter: 1mm W/B/W lines with hardwood veneer insert. I chickened out on doing a non circular shape for the rosette, I couldn't decide on what shape to finish with. Each looked OK at the time I drew them out but coming back later and I'd change my mind So circular it became Francis

Not been able to do much the last few days with house hunting but I have started to re-shape the braces. The soundboard is beginning to ring a little more. Keeping the second brace higher than the others as the bridge sits on that brace. Others will taper away from the bridge area... Francis

Francis,
Looking good. The ladder brace I'd keep highest in the central "scalloped" area is the one just below the soundhole. The one under the bridge I'd scallop down in the centre until the top rings nicely. The lengthwise braces (under the bridge wings) and the cf rods will provide the structural support here given the way the floating bridge/tailpiece forces work. What height is the under bridge ladder brace in the centre at the moment?

Francis, Looking good. ...What height is the under bridge ladder brace in the centre at the moment? Thanks Dave. Currently the central area of that brace is 11mm with the high parts at 13mm. I say currently as I'm whittling away in small amounts and checking ringing as I go. A little and often as they say . The brace on the bridge side of the soundhole is currently at 10mm and 12mm at the higher points. Francis

Francis,
On Keith's and Martin's Ceol Binn Mor's the central scallop in the bridge ladder brace was about 8mm high I think.

Thanks Dave, Continued easing material off the braces today. The brace below the bridge is now centrally 7.1mm and the profile now is much flatter rising more steeply at each end. Ends too have been reduced in height and the sustain on the tap has increased quite considerably probably 3 - 3.5 seconds. I've also thinned down the brace ends a little. Ready now to make the end blocks and bend the ribs.

Question for all you ultra knowledgeable people out there:
Octave mandolin string gauges - a good starting set maker etc... please?
I'd like to fit loop ended strings and see that D'addario do an EJ80 set? D'Addario are not strings I particularly like on my guitars but an octave mandolin is of course a different beast.

francis, I use D'Adds bought as singles (from the excellent Highly Strung site - www.highlystrung.co.uk/acatalog/dAddario-strings.html ) in 0.014”, 0.022w”, 0.032”, 0.049” gauges on CBM that davewhite made for me, also with 530mm scale length. These work out slightly more even tensioned across the set than EJ80 I think. Works for me anyway! What have you got on your CBM Martin? Keith
