My main instrument is: Whatever I'm building...

Getting plans together for an octave mandolin. I have some yew for the back & sides and alpine spruce for the top. Neck mahogany, other bits still to be decided and that may just 'happen' on the day! These are my thoughts so far as a mock-up in Photoshop. John Troughton's book has just arrived today so I'll be trawling through that for ideas, but I must thank Dave White on this forum for his help so far directly and the build threads elsewhere on here. Francis (must finish the dreadnought first though)

Looks brilliant! Have you thought about an oval hole rather than round?

Looks brilliant! Have you thought about an oval hole rather than round? Yes, it will probably be oval, further reading around this is indicating the oval sound hole will give a more even response across the range.

I'd go for a pentangle as it would give a more mystical edge to the sound with a dark overtone

I rather liked the heart shaped soundhole on the instrument pic in John Troughton's book... oval would be very nice too though. Good to see we are all helping to design this new build!!

I've changed the body outline and added some decoration. Had some time while glue was curing on the cutaway dreadnought.

Preparing some drawings of the sides: Taking the full depth at the tail as 85mm this is the profile I've ended up with for the top and bottom edges. I've not allowed for the thickness of the top and back plates as yet but at present I'm guestimating a reduction in the height of about 5.0 - 5.5mm. Maximum calculated deviation on the top side is 5.32mm which occurs at the widest point of the body as the top plate is flat along its length (cylindrical). Same for the back plate but the lowest point of the back's bowl is closer to the tail block but the back is curved in both directions so the edge profile is quite different. Good fun this.
