Well, despite my saying that the wait for my Fylde is quenching my GAS at the moment, I've developed a bit of a hankering for a lap slide style instrument after listening to some Martin Simpson and exposure to a square necked gretsch resonator.
so, after a little research, I thought I might prefer a weissenborn style guitar to a resonator as the tone seems to be more akin to a regular acoustic without the sharp attack and decay of the resonators.
i don't have a huge budget (£400 tops) as I'm only really looking to experiment a little - if I really enjoyed it I might invest later - but I want to get something that's good enough to last a few years and not feel cheap.
anyone have any advice?
I'm also looking for advice of tone bars...

Might something here be what you're after? www.anderwoodguitars.com/I know nothing about them at all though. I have played (or at least attempted to play)Dave White's Weissenborn-style guitar, and better still, heard him play it - very nice smooth sound. I'm sure Martin (Slidingwolf) and Dave will be able to say something more useful about them, and about tone bars. Keith

Never seen or played any of those on the Anderwoods website but the sound clips are impressive. As for bars - like slides it's a personal choice. I used to like the Shubb SP bars as their weight gives a very nice contact and sustain but Mark Thomson gave me a wooden handled Shubb GS1 that I really like and mostly use now. These instruments are great fun to play.

I play a Tim kill weissenborn (Aussie builder). Mine is all mahogany and I use a tribotone bar. I use John Pearce open g and d strings.
Goldtone make weissenborn in your budget.
Have you thought about using a regular acoustic with a nut riser to play lap style like Kelly joe phelps does? I did that for a while before I bought my Weiss.
Checkout Jeff Lang on YouTube or Thomas Oliver for some great Weiss players.

Keep your eye on the "Guitar Builds/Projects" section of the Forum as one of my projects this year is to make myself a Baritone Acoustic Lap Slide Guitar.

I was thinking about this not too long ago and the best budget ones are supposed to be Gold Tone. There are a few in London at Vintage and Rare and at Wunjo in that price bracket. I tried one in Wunjo in the last 12-18 months which was nice enough, but I struggled with the slide. Found this online, a little bit more than your budget but I reckon it's a great price nonetheless www.banjosdirect.co.uk/clearance-goldtone-weissenborn-w-sm-203-p.asp

Thanks for the personal message - I've replied if you're still about... I saw a second hand Gosden in vintage and Rae on Denmark st the other done - looked nice but I didn't try as it was well out of my price point... I can get hold of a square neck reso quite cheaply, but I think I may prefer the more woody tone of the weissenborn, though I'm a little concerned about the quality of the cheaper ones... It's very hard buying something you've never had any experience of...
