We've been having a try at different ways of presenting the song/tune but so far it comes out sounding a bit dirgey [ is that a proper word ]... A tough one to arrange I suspect when the best has been possibly done already....

A tough one indeed - I've rapidly realised I don't even know what the existing versions are all about. I'll watch with interest while you guys that know how to arrange existing songs weave your magic! Magnicifent prize for someone that's for sure! Mark

I'd agree ... There is a version on Y Tube featuring B J and Anne Briggs where neither appears to be paying much attention to what the other is doing .. Too cool for us I think... Maybe try another bottle of cider...

Andy, it's not meant to be easy, your collective suffering is one of my main pleasures in doing this! Imagine if I had chosen 'Who knows where the time goes', with the definitive Sandy Denny version always in your mind.
Have you all listened to Sandy's version of Blackwaterside?

Colin Of course Colin. And while I agree about Sandy, even her version seems to me to be defined by Bert!

I have listened to Sandy's version, and all I can say is that my version will be defined by the chords I know how to play

I listened to Sandy's version, wonderful singing but I find the folk-rock electric guitar and drumming a bit distracting. I may come back to it later but at the moment trying to internalise the melody from Ann Briggs solo version...

Mike Floorstand - I really like Anne's version too, Joe, as th minimal instrumentation does let the tune wend its way without tying it down too tightly to a regular rhythm or tempo. The version I like least is Liam Clancy's, which has some major differences in the melody from almost everyone else's. There's a few "variants" around, plus Jimmy Page's "ripoff" . That's trad tunes for you. I'm still struggling, I still reckon this kind of tune works best as a simple undaorned and unaccompanied melody, although a blues version almost emerged a couple of days ago. It didn't really work having "I woke up this morning" at the beginning.... Keith

I tried it this weekend and ended up with a much more cheerful piece but, by nature, Blackwaterside needs to be haunting. So, I may finish the new piece and call it something like Freshwaterside!

I'll have a go if noone objects. I need a break from electric music, the prize is a droolsome prospect and I hear an Asus2 to kick off, my second favourite chord in all the world.

I jumped into this today. I can actually play the Bert version, which is in dropped D. I wanted to get away from what I know, so I tuned to CGDGAD and started noodling. I've been noodling on it for a good 90 mins and think I've got the bones of something. I've never really done anything like this before and it's scratching an itch for me. Thank you Colin for setting this up. I'm really enjoying trying to figure something out instead of being a tab slave as I usually am!

I won't be doing a competition version now, for reasons stated elsewhere, but as I do have an arrangement I think I'll record it and post it in the Duck. Not having to work with judgement in mind I'll be able to be a bit less restrained and give my inspiration from the three Js (Jerry Garcia, Johnny Marr and dJango Reinhardt) more breathing room.

I spent another hour on my arrangement tonight, including 30 mins out on the front step in the dark. It was really nice to be playing outside. The arrangement's coming the gither. CGDGAD was the right move! I just need to put the pieces together. Not sure about vocals yet. Although if I can sing to the Bert version, I should be able to on my own!

Cams - I deleted your post in the other (ie incorrect!) section - hope that's OK with you! Good to hear that somebody is getting somewhere with this though! Keith
