Thankyou, Keith, Mark, Leo and Cams for your comments on this thread (and David Hutton who posted while I was writing this). Rthef, I'm not sure what to say about your comment, so I'll thank you anyway! As I've now posted my own entry, I feel comfortable about listening to and mentioning the other entries already posted. I never cease to be amazed, when the forum has one of these projects (particularly those with a narrow focus) how many different viewpoints and interpretations emerge. This song, having really been defined by three or four versions (which are, in many ways quite similar) over the years is a fantastic example of this. I've really enjoyed listening to the various entries and I've found them refreshing and different. I've listened to them all more than once and I raise a glass to leoroberts, R the F, Cams, @robbiej, ocarolan and congratulate everyone on being so refreshingly different. I'm not going to comment on each individual one, other than to say I've enjoyed them all, but I do have a favourite. It'll be interesting to see whether the judges agree with me. With a prize like this one, I'm amazed we haven't seen more entries. Maybe we'll have a late flurry.

I wonder if everyone should prepare themselves to be blown out of the water... When researching Blackwaterside, I found several references to Anne Briggs saying that her version was based on a version by Stan Ellison. We have a new member called Stan Ellison. Are you the same Stan, stanellison ? Welcome to the forum in any case!!

Well it looks like vikingblues has beaten Stan Ellison to it! Excellent version, I thought. Could have done with the vocals coming through a bit more, but hard listening shows they're well sung and suitably Celtic sounding. I really liked the arrangement. Walks the line between original and traditional very well, I thought. Not a comedy entry at all. Enjoyed it a lot.

Excellent vikingblues. The guitar sounds great with a real beast of a bass.

Nicely done Mark - as you say, the voice is a bit distant - how about another bash with different mic placement? Guitar and arrangement sound spot on though - Keith

Thanks Paul, David and Keith, and thanks for the like R the F. It's nice to get some positive comments when you feel as out of your comfort zone as a fish climbing a tree. But it does seem terribly unprofessional as an entry. I find the vocal melody horribly elusive on this song for some reason and need to keep practising that over and over before attempting a recording. So my singing is inhibited by that. The "bridge" camera has a built in stereo microphone, but no headphone socket and only a very tiny little speaker. So I don't get to hear how it sounds until the file is transferred to computer and played back. On the plus side it did avoid picturing my face where you'd have seen too many looks of pain and frustration. I don't know about having a second go Keith - it took too many takes and time to get what I've done. But maybe. At least the guitar part sounds clear and I'm pleased with how well the camera records that and rather surprised. Mark

Nicely done, Mike Floorstand. That's one of them there folding bikes, isn't it? As I refuse to even drive in London, I tip my hat to someone who's prepared to cycle! Good luck with the competition. (I say that to everyone but, you know, I don't really mean it)

So Mike Floorstand - keeping us all in suspense until the last minute! Well worth waiting for - very pleasing to the ear. Mark

That was lovely, Joe - so good in fact, that I definitely think you should be disqualified..... Keith Thanks Keith. I have tried hard to make it easy for Colin to disqualify my entry, by (a) using a completely different tune in the arrangement (b) wedding the tune to randomly chosen and completely irrelevant video footage (c) doing the recording on my Brook Creedy rather than the Symonds guitar I won in the last composition competition and (d) being late to the point of rudeness. However, the rules did not explicitly exclude previous comp winners so I guess we'll all be kept in suspense until the final verdict is announced
