I decided to go to this only to see Clive Carroll because I have not had chance to catch him live for a few years now. The last time I saw Tommy was with Martin Taylor reviewed here.
My views about Tommy are the same now as they were back in March 2013 - too loud with brash/harsh sound and apart from 2 or 3 gentler paced numbers all 'lets see how fast I can play this at' with little or no light and shade. In my opinion he lets himself down because he is such a top class player. He is almost like a caricature of himself but judging from many in the audience that is what they want. The best part of the Tommy part for me was when Clive came back and joined Tommy for a few numbers near the end.
What can I say about Clive? Well, he started the evening off and the sound proved to be much, much better than Tommy's. Most of his 3/4 hour set was from his latest excellent CD 'The Furthest Tree'(recommended)and if my memory holds he started with 'The Abbott's Hymn/In The Deep' followed by 'The Princes Waltz' and 'A Renaissance Suite' which is five pieces of duo music for which he played with a backing track for the 2nd parts. This is played by John Williams on the CD. A request from the audience for 'The Adventures of Wilfred' was considered and he said it was a extremely difficult piece that he had worked up for the CD and not played since. Anyway, he accepted the challenge - excellent entertainment because you could see him at times on the brink and he said his hands were shaking!! 'Mississippi Blues' followed and his set was over far to soon for me. Clive has a wonderful engaging, relaxed and humorous way of chatting to the audience and this is reflected in his playing. He really is one of my favourite players at the moment. As mentioned above he came back on to play a few with Tommy prior to Tommy finishing.
As stated my main aim was to see Clive play and Tommy was what I expected so all in all it was a good evening.
