It was suggested by one of your regular contributors to the forum that I post this here.
I’m currently doing some research on 000 12 fretters with a view to buying a decent one in the future that can handle drop tunings as low as CGCDFCD. I have a Recording King ROS 626 which is great for throwing in the car for holidays etc but could do with a better 12 fret instrument for home and recording comparable to my Martin 000 18 [14 fret). Any ideas/advice especially on minimum scale length for dropped tunings? I play mainly folk fingerstyle i.e. Martin Simpson, some O’Carolan pieces, James Taylor etc. I’ve always fancied a rich and warm sounding 12 fretter, but sadly cannot afford a 000 Kelday Tony McManus! Recommendations therefore welcome. Thanks, Pete.

It may be worth having a conversation with some of the luthiers on here, petef. francis could certainly build you a handmade guitar in that price range. I have always found davewhite very knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with and have a number of his instruments though quoted prices are a bit above your limit.. Both make multiscale guitars (as suggested on your welcome thread) and also 12-fretters. ajlucas makes wonderful guitars, too - though I've no idea of pricing. Try contacting them via the 'messages' tab... Have a quick look at their websites. Francis MilsomDave WhiteAdrian Lucas

How do you edit a post? There’s a typo error in mine. People will think I’ve got a seven string guitar!

How do you edit a post? There’s a typo error in mine. People will think I’ve got a seven string guitar! You get a limited time to edit after posting... but, to be honest, nobody minds the odd typo here or there. Apart from erroneous apostrophes. Do that and you get bumped If you REALLY need to edit something after posting (usually because you’ve admitted to ‘always liking banjos’ or think that ‘Sandy Denny was overrated’) you need to contact one of the moderators ( Martin, ocarolan or Wild Violet) and, for a small financial consideration into an offshore bank account, they might deign to assist. Or not.

OK, thanks. I’m now duly forewarned of the ‘apostrophe wardens’ on the prowl.

I’m playing a 12 fretter in that tuning at the moment, though I have to add its 660mm scale length. You could check out a Brook Lyn (I am also borrowing one of those- equally as good but needs heavier strings). In fact a Brook wouldn’t be too far beyond your budget.

Brook are only a little above that price and will build with custom scale lengths. They have a couple of 000-sized models, which I think are 14-fret as standard, but again they’re happy to customise. Both of my Brooks (Tamar and custom OM) have 650mm scale lengths and medium strings, which is my preference for C tunings, but I believe Phil Taylor plays Brooks with shorter scales and tunes them down without any problems.

Some great suggestions already. By the way, guess who bought Phil Taylor's Martin 000 18? I also was briefly introduced to his Brooks. He makes a good cuppa tea does Phil, but I let the first one go cold as I was a bit preoccupied! I must say I like Phil’s playing and compositions. I haven’t seriously considered a 00 body size, maybe I should. .

Seriously, petef, you should think about popping in to the forum meet in Halifax towards the end of this month. It'd be great to see you and you get the chance to play some great guitars and talk to their minders (you could even tune them to whatever you want as long as you promise to tune them back afterwards!) Details are here: www.acousticsoundboard.co.uk/board/39/hb9-board As you'll see, you don't need to come for the whole weekend - day (or evening) visitors are more than welcome
