Well... One of the strangest gigs / performances I've played! Sat in the corner of HMV, taped off like we were in a crime scene, and ignored by just about everyone save for a few young kids and the occasional jazz fan. Furthermore we were in the "sale" section (£55 for three vinyl albums! What??? Mind you I haven't seen so much vinyl in a record shop since about 1980). Nevertheless the management loved it and have asked us back if we want. And, in a way, it's something I never thought would happen - me playing an hour and a half of jazz live. We played a set comprised of the usual 30s and 40s swing and gypsy jazz standards: Minor Swing, Sweet Georgia Brown, All Of Me, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Avalon etc etc. Generally quite happy with my playing, although I do have to keep reminding myself to relax. Here's an excerpt of Django's Blues For Ike: www.instagram.com/reel/C3vFe9cNIz2/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Look forward to hearing your verdict, Phil.
I've always been in the emperor's new clothes camp - but, from the responses, it sounds like they really might be the real deal. I use heavy picks (flat and thumb) and so long as they're the right shape I don't worry about make. Just glanced down and noticed I'm currently using one I bought from Sun Studios in Memphis. :-)

Talking of Furch, I just put a new set of strings on mine and am loving it all over again. I've neglected this guitar for too long and it's been tucked away at the back of the cupboard. I think the strings have been unchanged since my days at the Bryan Sutton Artistworks school which was about four years ago! I had an old set of Gibson Masterbuilt Premium that I'd never got round to using so on they went - wow! Furch heaven again.

Aside from a couple of open-mics this will be the first (almost) proper outing for the GJ duo:

Some fine playing on her channel. Just 17, too. Hope she keeps at it.

Yes, I think organisation is key! I know I'm never going to be able to focus on just one area, no matter how hard I try, so I need to get some kind of methodology that works across all my areas of musical interest. At the moment I'm working harder than at any other time in my life (retirement is the #1 guitar improvement tool IMHO!) but I'm not convinced I'm seeing as much progress as wished for.

I'd echo what others have said - a really beautiful piece of work, Francis!

I see they have a 13 fret Atkins model. Could be a sweet spot between 12 and 14, although probably not good for those with OCD!

There's a chap around this area who plays open mics and has a couple of Lowdens. I must say they do sound nice.

Yes - but the different relative bridge position really does make a difference to the sound (in my experience). I don't know quite what it is, but it's there. To the extent that I have tried out multiple guitars in shops and at shows and, without having spotted that a guitar is a 12-fretter, I have immediately preferred it when playing it. [/div] I've been thinking about this change of bridge position as it relates to the right hand, too. I've been really struggling to get my flat picking to sound as fluent as I want, and it struck me that my natural right arm position, when flat picking, is putting the pick quite close to the bridge, where physics would determine that the strings are a little tougher to pick. So I tried the same tune with my 12 fret gypsy jazzer and... Wow! Instant improvement in feel. Early days yet, but I may have hit upon something that could help my playing a lot. Maybe not, of course. Will try and post the song in question one of these days.

Excellent stuff. Both the fact that it happened and the recounting of it. Glad you that you got so much benefit from it, too. I'm a huge advocate of lessons, although I haven't had a proper face to face one since I was 13. I recall reading once that Howling Wolf took lessons all his life - whatever town he found himself in on tour he would seek out the most renown teacher and see what he could learn. It's never too late.
Looking forward to the next songs, now, Leo.
