Hi,
Just spotted, for those with Sky, a new series starting on Sky Arts 1 (with numerous repeats during the week) called Guitar Star. First programme is Tuesday 9th June at 8.00 pm. It says it is about a 'nationwide search for a new guitar star'. I guess it will be largely electric but nevertheless might be interesting.
PS, for obvious reasons I did not enter!

You are very welcome ocarolan. The mental image of you in a pinny driving a hoover was just a little too much, at least without some form of liquid anaesthetic. Brian

I have just watched the first programme in this series, with guitarists playing in Cardiff and Dublin. It was genuinely inspirational. There was much to admire and some truly jaw-dropping technique. More importantly for me, there were some pieces that, in the space of a few minutes, made an emotional connection with me. One of these was nikdavies, who, without flashy pyrotechnics or superfluous percussion, gripped me with her melodic playing. The judges were supportive and constructive and and - unlike so many in these programmes - not bent on self-promotion or showing off. This is now a must-see for me. This first episode is repeated tonight (Friday 12 June) and on Sunday, on Sky Arts. The second episode is on Tuesday 16 June at 20:00. Brian

Great recommendation.

Hi Brian! Thank you for your kind comments There were indeed some absolutely incredible guitarists there. You can also watch all the programme on youtube. Here is the link: (I don’t have Sky TV – so very glad they are putting the programme on youtube so quickly) All the best, Nik

Just watching it now. Some fabulous stuff here, just a shame most of the electric stuff is so typical. Acoustic wins every time for me!

Does anyone else find programmes like these a bit 'cringey'?
I mean, fair play to everyone for taking part, and, if I saw a lot of these players down the local open mic I'd be impressed (although I find the 'tapping/percussion/harmonics' style a little 'background music') but, when it's on TV with all the over the top 'that was amaaazing' comments from the judges it just makes me cringe.

I'm nto criticising the musicians by the way, just the format....

I felt the same jackorion, but compared to certain other "talent" shows involving, apparently, performing stunt dogs (wtf?) and deliberate public humiliation of delusional and/or borderline unstable individuals who just want to be on TV, I'd choose the sycophantic approach every time! Agree completely about the talent on show, and the tapping...

I watched it this morning and was excited to watch it but I totally agree with it being cringy with the judges comments.
I don't know what I expected but listening to some of the stuff they were playing was just fancy techniques or back ground music only few auditions caught my attention but wasn't me jumping shouting give them a record deal.
But must say that last acoustic guitarist harmonics were nice
