Guitare ImprovisationGuitare Improvisation is a superb feed packed with backing tracks and instruction. It has a strong jazz manouche bent but anyone interested in improv could get some benefit from it. It is a French language site in general, but there's plenty of instruction in English and onscreen tabs (there are free printable versions on its website), superb lead demos and backing tracks speak their own language. I hadn't looked at the site in a while, but when a backing track for Belleville in the old Django style appeared on Youtube this morning I couldn't resist getting out a mando and joining in. First time I've played in months.

I said, "Nice looking guitar, that. I wonder how much it is," and my wife made a weird squeaking sound. She still doesn't believe me when I say I'll never buy another instrument.
I nearly bought a Paul Brett 12 string once. My entry for "Anecdote Of The Day."

Pretty soon you'll stab yourself in the finger with a string end Larry, then the fingertips won't feel so bad by comparison.
Seriously now, I wonder if you're holding down chords with too firm a grip. It's surprising how much you can relax your fingers and still squeeze out a clean chord.

Had to add this pic when I found it. It kind of invites a caption too... Please, Please, Please Let Me Twang What I Want? Sheila Take A Banjo? That Uke Isn't funny Anymore? That picture's brilliant.

This thread could go on forever choosing a guitar is such a subjective matter if the instrument speaks to you and sounds and feels right then that's the one to go for. New or old doesn't really matter as long as it's not played out. I have played two same model Martins with consecutive serial numbers they both sounded good but quite different. Yup. When I last went looking serioulsy for a guitar - something over ten years ago - I went out with quite a high budget and tried many guitars over a period of weeks, but kept going back to an Ibanez AW1000ECE for around £700. It just sounded like "me" and there was and probably remains (I've stopped playing) something about the neck and set up that lent a fluidity to my playing I never found on any other acoustic. I got it for £550 by the way, by making noises about buying it for half an hour then pretending I was going to walk out of the shop.

If money was no object I'd still not waste it on an expensive guitar.

I'd just say the heavier the better in general but above 16s you're literally pushing it.

I use whatever was on the bloody things when I bought them. I have grown to love the 'dead strings' sound... As a nun, are you able to offer them the last rites?

Martin 80/200. Nice "sing" to them, with an even feel that makes for clean chording, very good for folk and jazz stylings. I used to use heavier D'addarios for bluegrass, but can't be bothered now.

He was the hit of the first Sidmouth Festival I went to, helping to make a week that could have been ruined by torrential rain a success with his inventive humour, catchy songs and musicianship. I saw him many times after that, and came away with that glow you get from a great gig every single time. A life well lived.

I really don't think playing on a poor instrument makes you a better player in any way. It just makes you adept at compensating for the flaws in that instrument, when you could be taking advantage of the superior ergonomics and tone of another.

He has his critics, but band politics aside, he is an amazing musician. McGuinn's apparent jealousy and resentment of Crosby's success after sacking him from The Byrds was embarrassing, frankly.

Interesting. I'm surprised that "bark" isn't there, given that it's a mandolin-based site. "Knock knock" doesn't cover the deep throatiness of a good mandolin "bark" for me.
Deep throatiness. Oh dear. Cue Keith.
