I tend to agree with this! [ducks ...] I am giving the Elixir's another try, last time I tested them I thought they were very slippery. For sound, I would say they are good as anything else I have tried, the slipperiness scores low on playability. I am hoping I can adjust to give them a fair chance. E I really like Elixirs. I replaced 2 month old Martin SPs with Elixir 80/20 Bronze Custom Lights on the "all English" last night. The improvement in sound (to my ears) was the most significant I have ever noticed on a string change. I little slippy yes but after an hour or so I did not notice it.

I would humbly suggest that yes time for a change. The strings still sound OK to you, but it's like the going grey thing, you don't really notice it, as it's a gradual change, but boy would you notice the difference if you dyed your hair black again! You'll probably notice a big difference in the guitar if you put a new set of strings on. New strings put on every 3 months or so would only come to about £1 a week. Buy three sets at a time and change regularly. Francis is a very good guitar builder, his guitars deserve to be maintained at their best. Lecture over. Colin Crikey, now I need to change my strings and dye my hair!

The thought of learning a piece up to a specific note before proceeding sounds very odd - by the time you get to the end, you'll be amazingly super good at the first few bars because you've played them a zillion times, wheres the end will have only had a little work. Result will be a lumpy performance and it's unlikely you'll get to the stage of feeling comfortable enough with the whole piece to play it with expression and feeling all through as the piece will inevitably be less and less rehearsed as you play through it. That perfectly describes all tunes I have learnt from tab! Still have not attempted to do it by ear yet, seems almost impossible to me but prompted by this thread, I will give it a go.

The Guitar is finished! First good day next week I'll get the final pictures up. I'm toying with a game of musical chairs to decide the winner, gives everyone a chance, big ones can push little people out of the way and the little ones can sneak in little gaps left by the big uns. Colin Really sad I am missing hb9 now, love a game of musical chairs!

I liked it very much, if I ever make the plunge for lessons you would be at the top of my list (with Mark Hanson)! I think the shortness of it appeals to me and perhaps just a pointer to further details. Most importantly you come across as calm and relaxed which really appeals.

Ah - I really appreciate your encouragement Scorpiodog - your analogies and insights are spot on - but it just isn't going to happen, in this lifetime, for me. I'm condemned to a perpetual audience of zero, and I accept the sentence happily. It's OK - it's safe - nothing can go wrong, beyond my own disappointment with my own performance to myself. There's never any upside buzz, certainly, but there's no risk of global humiliation and shame from a complete blank out. I'll settle for that. The applause may be a tad muted when the performance surprises and delights - but that's OK too - if nobody's about, I might even give myself a subdued whoop. Come to think of it, maybe I'll just settle for a hint of a smile. Just in case. Someone could hear a subdued whoop. And that would constitute a public performance - I might freeze.....in mid-subdued-whoop....... Peter I would recommend going to Halifax (http://acousticsoundboard.co.uk/thread/8212/annual-forum-halifax-sept-2018). I don't think you could find a more encouraging, relaxed and friendly environment in which to try and play live. I have even done it and trust me you could not meet a more social awkward, shy and untalented player. It took me three visits, a couple of pints and I am not saying I would ever do it again, but I am very pleased that I did at least give it a go. + There are loads of fancy guitars and wonderful players to watch and if you really lucky you might get a uke lesson from a very talented and hairy chap. If you are really really lucky you might walk away with a fancy guitar, I did on my first visit:)

Thanks Rob - here's hoping you're right about simpler. There is something of the classical in the strings sound / feel. I did get the impression that the Silk and Steels are a bit niche / minority taste and your comment sort of confirms that David. We'll just need to press ahead with our beliefs regardless. Mark They really do sound lovely in your noodling Mark, but then your noodling always sounds lovely! I am going to put them back on the All English when I next restring.

I completely missed your recording when I first read this post Mark, I think they'll be retiring me before too long (as long as it comes with a fat pension and a diamond encrusted gold watch I'll take it ) oodles of noodles there, interesting to hear the silk and steels, I think I have played some before ( David Hutton 's all English had them on I think?) very different feel, I like quite a slinky feel and enjoy playing the classical in my office so I may explore more. Good luck with your life reordering but I'd say it will be simpler than puppy training! You be correct Rob. I really like these strings, but I think I was the only one (in Halifax).

In a nutshell, don't get bogged down with pieces well beyond your standard and avoid pieces you don't like! Jonny Bugger there goes my entire strategy for the last 5 years! I will spend this evening with you Jonny!
