You can't learn to play jazz from books. I am the living proof of that! I'm quite proud of my small handful of arrangements of jazz standards, but they are not jazz. I shan't let that stop me though! Here's my latest: I shall have to look up Don Stiernberg's book at some point, it does sound useful (although to be honest I have a shelf full of others currently languishing unread and waiting for a rainy day)

The luthier-built sound seemed much warmer too me, but also it looked like you were more comfortable and enjoyed playing it more, easier to get better sound, maybe easier to produce vibrato so you did this more often and for a fraction longer?

Yes I bought some recently, I like the ones with a sharp-sih point which seem to be based roughly on the Dunlop 3 Jazz shape. Found them a bit slippery in the fingers at first but fine once I'd handled them a few times. They are standing up well compared to some Blue Chips I have.
I am endlessly fascinated by how much difference the pick shape and thickness and material makes - and also how you hold it - particularly to mandolin tone. Also how my own tastes have changed - I used to play almost exclusively with a Wegen M150 but now barely use it!

Thanks for posting this, it is astounding and inspiring.
Although on another level I do find it mildly annoying when very good players, when asked how they do something very difficult, say things like "I don't really think about it". Being able to play like this no doubt requires some innate ability (say, the wrist muscles twitch faster than average in some direction) but also a large amount of very focussed systematic practice. I don't mind if the best players don't want to tell us their secrets of success, but it seems disingenuous to suggest it just happens naturally.

Great videos Keith! You've managed to exceed my output within a week of having the guitar, I'd like to be able to say it's the quality rather than quantity that matters but I think you've beat me there too. I think I can claim a greater variety of t-shirts at least?
