There is no middle ground here and perhaps the best way to achieve clarity of thought on the matter is this.
Would you want to buried in a coffin that colour?
Thank you.

Thanks for the responses guys - very helpful and instructive. You know, I’m beginning to wonder if it wouldn’t be helpful for me to learn which notes are where on the fretboard....a little thought and efficiency could go a long way.... I have historically a)’d but have always struggled with a clean barre - even though it’s only the outer strings I need to worry about with that shape - been b)ing lately and struggling a little with a buzzing 5th string - so your comment re light contact is useful Riverman. When I get around to learning my second chord I’ll come back to you all. Much appreciated.

If you’re playing fingerstyle in standard tuning and need an F chord in the first position, including a first fret 6th string bass “F” note, do you:
a) barre the whole thing with your index finger b) use the index finger on strings 1 and 2 and wrap your thumb onto first fret 6 c) have a cunning plan / helpful hints / subtle variations
I can play a) or b) with equal unpredictability / accuracy so would welcome any c) ideas.

..to 61% or thereabouts.
Lots of buzzing bass strings here...

Excellent tale scorpiodog! We need to know, though, if you do get buried with it, what tuning will it be in? These things matter.

“a bit of banter whilst doing a quiet "rehearsal" of the initial finger positions helps a lot.” As a long time Townes Van Zandt expert, I can recommend the ice breaker joke that he uses at the start of track 2 on Live at the Old Quarter, ocarolan. But maybe not in church.

Several of them have wonderful names too. I’m hoping Gurf Morlix isn’t a typo curmudgeon - in any case - wish I had a name like that. Being born Gurf Morlix just has to give you a big headstart in the world of guitar playing. Peter (just call me Gurf)

"You should get yourself down to North American Guitar in London and get all these ticked off your bucket list then!"
What a terrifyingly intimidating prospect.
If ever I plucked up the courage to set out on that mission I would wet my pants at the TNAG door, burst into tears and walk all the way home, a broken man.

Our mother the mountain and delta momma blues are my fav studio albums. However, i think Townes was at his best live. Just him and a guitar. Live at the old quarter and rear view mirror are wonderful live albums. The recent sky blue album is great as well as it’s just him and a guitar recorded in some journalists house. Picked up a copy of “Live at the Old Quarter” on ebay - just listening to it now - superb. Thanks for the intro bellyshere!

Warning: The author knows nowt.
Another thing you might try would be to tune down a half tone and capo on 1. Eric Bibb does this a lot.
You'd still be in pitch then, and I'd have thought this might take the sharp edge off the sound you're getting.
Probably works best with a longer scale instrument I'd have thought.
Having said all that though, I wouldn't expect a rosewood / cedar guitar to be sounding overly bright anyway whatever strings were on it - might be worth asking a setup man to take a look?
Good luck with it.

Thirty odd years of self restraint is very admirable Craig - but something had to give... Of course, it goes without saying that with three new 'leccies on the rack, the rig needs rebalancing......when exactly did you last buy a new amp? Go on - you know you deserve it... Enjoy!

There are many, many brands of guitar that I've never played but the three N. American ones I'd hope to experience before I snuff it would be Bourgeois, Santa Cruz and Froggy Bottom - probably in that order. Mind you, they'd all have to be smaller models, probably 00, but that instrument just looks fantastic dawkins - congratulations - I hope we get to hear something of it soon! Peter
