Here’s how it looks after sanding flush: Then the Gold EVO fretwire is pressed in: The African Blackwood bridge blank has the bottom sanded to match the top’s curvature: The bridge blank is then marked and slotted for the bone saddle: The saddle blank is cut to final shape Then the sides of the bridge are shaped and the bone saddle is fitted. Here’s the fretted neck fitted with the bridge placed on the top:

Well now the finishing starts or the start finishes. The pores in the Colombian Rosewood back and sides are filled using egg white. Small pieces of 240 grit sandpaper are dipped in egg white and rubbed on the body creating a slurry of Colombian Rosewood and egg white that is pushed into the pores - the albumin in the egg white acts as a binder. This process is repeated until the pores are filled. As I don't do mirror finishes it doesn't matter if a few pores remain unfilled and this can make it look more like the instrument is made out of wood rather than plastic:

Very tasty! Keith Yes - I think letting the crushed garlic cloves infuse the egg whites for a few hours helped too

Hey Dave, I've always wanted to ask this question, and am rather reluctant to do so for fear of appearing a fool...but, it just keeps bugging me. Is there any potential health risk to coating a guitar with egg white? I can imagine old Edwina Currie having forty fits at the prospect of handling a guitar washed in egg!
Just curious!

Rob, Only if you lick it I've had no health problems in applying it and once it has dried I suspect any salmonella will be dead and gone. Plus it gets covered in finish eventually.

Initial setup involves fitting the tuners to the neck and shaping the nut, fitting the bridge tailpiece. The strings are fitted with slots cut in the nut and saddle and the action tweaked and set up. We decided to go with this brass tailpiece rather than a hand made one - it's very light and is designed for 12 strings buut gives a very straight string path over the bridge: Then the strap button is put on the treble side into the neck block: Here's how CBM looks: I thought it good to record some birthing sounds for Keith and for posterity and sent it to Keith last night. The strings have been on for about 45mins prior to the recording, capoed at the second fret (nut not sorted yet) and struggling a little as the action is high especially on the low G strings. But I did each string and a strum to let you hear the sustain (I had to stop it in the end) and then a fumble through "Singing Bird /The Lark in the Clear Air" - flat EQ from a Zoom H4n recorded in Stereo mode: "Singing Bird /The Lark in the Clear Air"I was worried about the trebles being muffled but they started c"himing" after a minute or so and are continuing to blossom. The sustain is very good and I can hear the "De Faoite" reverby chiming sound in it. Early days though. The neck feels a bit "chunky" and will need some slight re-shaping and finishing again and the binding needs the edge taken off a little bit more where the playing arm rests on it and then the lacquer needs to be polished up when it has hardened but it's pretty much there.

The sustain just goes on and on ... that's a lovely sound, Dave. When it's all settled down and you've done the other little things you mentioned, I suspect Mr O'C is going to be a very happy chappy - as should you be

Certainly is a bit good innit?! I reckon I will indeed be a very happy chappy, and may well be getting my sweaty paws on CBM before too much longer. Dave played it over the phone for me this morning too! Dave - Forgot to mention this morning that strap button position looks spot on! Keith
