There's a crack up in the ceiling, And the kitchen sink is leaking. Out of work and got no money, A Sunday joint of bread and honey.

A couple of two liners from "Jackie and Murphy" by Martin Simpson. A song that is stacked full of powerful lines and narrative - a truly emotive song. The story of Jackie, who became a soldier saving the wounded (300 of them in four weeks) in the Dardanelles conflict, and his donkey Murphy. Dardanelles - a hell on earth for eight months and 250,000 casualties on each side.
"And you died to save the very last but Murphy fetched them back alone."
"Some things never change Jackie and perhaps they never will, While the bloodless fools in Whitehall they sit in judgement still."

Jimmy MacCarthy..."Katie" Tumbling curls of green by stainglass streaming light.. And a yellow coloured lampshade used to keep us up all night... The mirror that won't talk and your nightgown on the door.. And the old pedal Singer just don't sing no more.. Now I'm looking through a tunnel back into the room.. With the genius of a druid when the sunlight floods the tomb.. And I'm never going back there and I couldn't anyway.. "Cause though I made the great escape , I never got away..

This weekend's weather made me think of one of my favourite rhymes, from the American folk song 'Oklahoma Home'.
Mister, as I bent to kiss her, She was picked up by a twister, My Oklahoma woman blown away.

I've resisted posting on this thread as I could probably fill it with Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell and Kris Kristopherson lines. One I do like is Richard Thomson's from '1952 Vincent Black Lightning': "Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme." Oh and the bike is a work of art! Good ones now go for between £120k and £150k+. This one sold at the Mecum auction for $275,000.

And he screamed like a panther In the middle of the night along with Now the lesson is over And the killin's begun from Day of the Preacher (Willie Nelson) - your post above reminded me of it geddarby. But I think my liking of those lines has been heightened by the use of the song in the "Edge of Darkness" TV series. About 35 years ago. Help ... that makes me feel old! Mark

Another of my favourites is from Jethro Tull.

What's that you're telling me baby? You can't stand that harp I blow? You prefer the sound of a pedal steel And a man that I'll never know Well it's raining Raining down on me My baby's left Chicago town And moved to Tennessee
