Nice one Rory.
Nice one (again) Leo.
Having seen the back and sides in the flesh, I can tell you all the wood looks beautiful.
I'd also like to point out that I have Tirga Beags, NOT a Taran Mhor so I'm perfectly entitled to be part of the Road Trip.
Arent' I...?
Gonna be interesting what you all make of the double sides...
Happy daze.

I'm very busy on commission work and new Mandolins so it will be an on going build. Glad to hear it, but what's this about mandolins, Rory? I thought you were too busy to build 'em and here's me sitting waiting like a dummy and you've gone and started some Seriously, more info on these would be appreciated

...maybe a Taran mandolin could travel as a stowaway in the Road Trip Taran Mhor box....? Keith

Thanks everyone! Leo - Just brilliant! Jackorion - Great News! Alig - Go on then Martin - You can give me some feed back on the first one Ocarolan - Like your thinking A wee Mandolin update; I'm making two models, an A5 and a celtic. I'm interested in to see what both bring to the table. The Celtic will be Indian rosewood and european spruce and the A5 will be a Maple and european standard. I'll maybe do a we post on another page when things get going? All the very best for now. Rory Taran Guitars www.taranguitars.co.uk

Would love to try a Taran mandolin. I take it the celtic is a carved top ? Anyway, I don't know if I've said already in this thread but can I join in the Mhor road trip? Will be living in Bradford on Avon by the time this starts, just in case that helps with logistics, Robbie

Hi All, A wee update on the tour build. The guitar is coming on nicely, I should have the back on next week but I've got some pictures as promised. Bag pressing the double sides together after they come out of the 'time machine'. The cut away getting the same treatment. Once the sides and cut away where done they got mitred together. I don't bind to these parts as I like the grain to follow round the cut away. Neck block in. Complicated wee bit of wood, many angles!! One to the back. Brown Tape is my only workshop companion, oh the dog as well! Braces on in the go deck. The back stays here for 2-3days. A bit of R&R for it. A lovely piece of German Spruce. On to the linings. Because of the double sides I use a single piece of reclaimed Brazilian Mahogany instead of my usual laminated sycamore linings. Reclaimed, its still got the paint on the edges. This came out of a Clydesdale Bank, probably the only thing I'll ever get back from a bank! A wee finish sand and to the iron. Once the linings are in place the back face is scribed to the arch of the back and then sanded to fit. Here you can see the mitres of the cut away. The back all tuned up and ready for fitting. Now the sides and back are ready for fitting I have to make sure that the cut away is at the correct angle to marry up with the edge of the tapper of the fret board. The piece of wood that links the neck to the tail stops any movement when I glue the back on. The sides are very stiff which is the purpose of the double sides but even a slip when gluing of .3 of a mm can throw everything out. Measure once cut twice and all that! So that's us for now. I shall follow up with more photos as they come. I hope that everyone has a great weekend. All the very best, Rory www.taranguitars.co.uk
