Today I took my Lowden to the Guitar shop because i was getting a strange fret buzz. It was all sorted by a good twist of the trust rod. Now it playe Open C (C G C E G C) Beautifully. I tuned it to standard and it was horrible. It wasn't nice to play at all. I could simply adjust it back but it would be too much of a hassle. So do any of you keep guitars in a certain tuning and leave it or do you have one for all tunings/purposes. Plus what guitar you use for what purpose. My Faith FJ is for Standard + Percussion. My Lowden F23CFF is for all tunings lower than standard

I know you don't want to hear this, but you need a "Standard Tuning" compatible Lowden... as well!

It's not G.A.S., it's using the right tool for the right job :-)

Martyn Joseph loves his lowden and it has toured the world with him time and again . He usually tells the audience when and where he got it and often refers to how low it can go tuning wise with no hassle . id have thought a guitar of that kind of ilk could handle dropped tunings in its sleep . Unless of course your using a very light gauge of strings . Maybe the more experienced among us who use more altered tunings could pitch in here as im sure there must be an easier way round the issue than getting the Allan keys out .

A lot of guitar shops ' have a go themselves' when 'setting up' guitars. Take your guitar to a professional tech....it will play great. IMHO

I had a Martin setup for a low c tuning and played awful when tuned back to standard. So, now i have different guitars for different tunings. It's a great way of telling her indoors why i need so many guitars.

Last night this kept me up thinking on how to get around it. Lower tension but still get slight buzz or put really light strings on and hope it holds in open C.
this morning at 7 got guitar out changed to 11s-52s and got it in C and it plays lovely. Even in dadgad it plays better when I play 2 hand tapping. Then I tried standard bit hard to play but not much difference between first and seventh fret onwards strings are much higher off fret board but isnt too killer.
Ill keep them on for the next few weeks and see. If Im not too have ill just bring the trust rod back down

If I went back to 12's I know my Moon can go from C tunings up to standard without a huge effect on the action. Currently has 13's on and it doesn't go above D-standard, even though I know it will be fine.
My J-45 can do the same with 12's on, although that's getting EXP 13's in the next couple of days and will most likely stay in and around standard for singing lessons. The J-45 is my go to for anything that contains strumming.
I like my Moon too much to not use it for different tunings, maybe if I had several guitars I liked as much I'd do it, but I can't see myself getting a much cheaper guitar to leave in, say, open D. I'd just want to pick my Moon up and re-tune it.

I have a Moon 003 in standard tuning using Elixir 12's and a Stanford dread in DADGAD using 13's. Saves messing about tuning and re-tuning one guitar with the related stresses to both guitar and strings (and me!).

Good point on the strings, while my guitars are fine with re-tuning it will certainly shorten string life. I tend to replace them every month but realistically that's pushing it a bit. Keep meaning to give elixirs a try but something is putting me off on the Moon, even though it came with them, I really like D'addarios. EXPs are going on the J-45 tonight.

Set-ups are always fascinating.
For finger style open tunings I tend to prefer a slightly higher action than many would use. I'm not one of those soft players, I like to beat the shit out of the guitar from time to time. The tone seems better to me than it does if the action is very low.
My Martin J40 is not used much these days and when it is it is used for ragtime and Dropped D thumping tunes. If has been very good it might get a go at DADGAD ...

I dislike Higher action but saying that For the past 4 years I've only played guitars where the wind could have played it. Maybe in two weeks I'll change my tune.
Really feel I need to get a wholesome standard Drop D tuning guitar.

Sorry Clydeslide, my Moon is of course a 0003 not 003 as I mistakenly posted previously. It is as Moon's website apart from a slightly wider neck.
