Well its been a couple of days since I did any loofah work so I've started thinking hard about the next build - A 17 inch carved archtop modelled on a benedetto Manhattan guitar from his book on archtop builds. Drawings downloaded from Georgia Luthier Supply and rescalled to suit the Benedetto Manhattan. - link: ultimate-guitar-online.ultimate-online-services.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_2&products_id=400Prep drawings to make the profile gauges to the front and back plates, plus a neck profile: Plate support for carving, two sided so I can work the inside/outside of each plate by simply turning the form over: Top plate profiles: Back plate profiles: Longitudinal profiles front and back: Neck profile: Emails out for material quotes at the mo TBC...

Footnote:
I've been comparing more closely the plans, and sizing given in Benedetto's book (notably the sizing given on page 9 for the completed body mould) and the shape of the plan given at the back of the book - they're different. The book plan is smaller (for publication) and you are asked to copy it and re-size to suit, doing that however when the body is enlarged to give a lower bout of 17 inches produces a body that is short of the 20.75 inches quoted on page 9. If I overlay the plan with rectangles of 20.75 (body length) x 17 (Lower bout) and 12.75 (Upper bout) and 10.5 (Waist) and resize the Benedetto plan (i.e. stretch the length without changing the width) then the outline touches the rectangular box in the right places producing a good match.
So if you work from the Benedetto book be careful resizing the plans without checking the dimensions elsewhere.
The body on the Georgia plans is 0.147 inches (3.75 mm) longer than the Benedetto dimensions when the lower bouts are both at 17 inches - not enough to worry too much about.
Dimensions on the Georgia plans can be confusing as most seem to be made up by adding together smaller parts to find overall sizes.
Another roll of lining paper needed I think...

I don't suppose it will be of any use to you, francis, but this is the drawing I made from the Benedetto 17" and it measures 20.71" by 17.04". If it might be of use to you I can add dimensions and other profiles and put them on a pdf to send to your website email. Just say the word, though I know other people's diagrams can often be a distraction...

Thanks Rob R the F , I'm generating my own topograph based on the Benedetto full sized profiles from the book. I'm also keeping an eye on comparisons to the Georgia plan topographs. Thickness' will be close to those given but will depend on material stiffness. Benedetto seems to do most tuning around the perifery after the box is closed, but that's too far away at the mo...

Following this with interest, Francis.
Thanks for Taking the time and effort to share the process.
*blows the dust of the Benedetto book*
I'm sure you've seen them already but for everyone else here's John Monteleone with some insight into the art of arch top making.

He does waffle a lot though rather than getting to the point that timber is different even from the same tree trunk. Treat thickness dimensions with a pinch of salt - start a little over-size and work the material until it gives you the sound you want...
