How's the resin pocket looking Francis? Did you get away with it? ourmaninthenorth Still there at the mo but much reduced. Just working on the general curve first taking down the edge to just over final thickness. The re-curve's and surface smoothing will come later. ...

After the bulk spruce removal yesterday its been a day of refinement today - nowhere near finished, bumps where there shouldn't be but coming on. Profile templates Contours so far One really good thing is the resin pocket has gone - annular rings show some distortion where they went around the resin, few small colour flecks but pleased at the moment. Dark smudges are from pencil lead rubbed onto the templates and transferred at high points where the templates touch on the soundboard. The profile along the centre line is correct - other profiles are taken off the central one.

Right turned it over and started on the inside: Three images of the initial carving. Started using a pillar drill and a 15/32" drill (because it was one of the only unused therefore really sharp drills in the box!)with a short stumpy peg fixed to the drill table directly under the drill bit and the depth stop set to 9 mm above the peg. Then drill a series of hole across the inside of the soundboard giving me this: Then its out with the squirrel plane and chisel to remove everything between the holes: That's where I've left it today. Humidity is quite high in the workshop (60+%)and the top has swollen slightly (being tighter in the carving support) so the top is back in the dehumidifier cabinet and I need to mow the lawn TBC

Forgot to post the front face image before moving on to the interior One of the log images taken after each attack phase : I'm running a sander over the surface after each planing session so I can take measurements, the numbers are mm's minus the decimal point - so 89 means 8.9 mm

I imagine your hand is a bit sore after all that planing with a little squirrel-tail like that. I have, coincidentally, exactly the same plane. Also coincidentally, I write numbers all over my soundboards-in-progress without decimal points. Spooky, eh? It's a small wor(kshop)ld, isn't it? Coming on fine. Keep up the perspiration levels.

After a superb weekend in Halifax - it's back to work so to speak: Soundboard now just over (the books quoted thickness), However the tap tone and stiffness (flexing) feel good so its as far as I'm taking it before cutting the 'f' holes and fitting the parallel bracing: Left image is a convex face - right is concave, light coming from the right hand side in both cases.

francis if you could get that contour effect on the back, your guitar would sell despite the fact that it sounded great, ( and as a rule I only like plain instruments) Ged
