It’s shaping up to be another work of art, Francis. Andrew has treat coming to him. Mine has opened up even more and sounds utterly beautiful; even with my sausage fingers.

We've now got to the stage where we are talking about the finish on the guitar. I have never been a fan of glossy "varnished' finishes so I asked francis what he thought about using an oiled finish. He has been trying this on some offcuts using Liberon finishing oil. The pics show the effect on cedar [ the top] , walnut [the neck] and yew [the back and sides] I think the wood is really enhanced ...I'm unconcerned re damage resistance as I'm only planning to use the guitar at home. Francis has a few further tests to make but I think this could be the way forward..

I'm trying for a rubbed oil finish outlined in an article by Kevin Aram (very nice guy) in American lutherie N° 127/Fall 2016 issue. There he's outlined his technique for a rubbed oil finish. Next tests when the new Liberon Finishing oil arrives next week (above tests on 4 year old oil which had started to crystallise in the can...). Also will better prep the offcuts in line with Kevin's article.

Right now I am testing an alternative to the Liberon finishing oil. My can of finishing oil also had crystallised, so I decided to make an attempt with Osmo hard wax oil. I think the product is called PolyX in the UK. I've tried it once before with descent result. Then it was the satin version, now I try the glossy. I'm in the middle of the process but I have high hopes. I will let you know how it goes in the "Two mandolins"-thread.

My Kinkade has an oil finish and I really like it, being made in 1984 it has lived a life but it has aged very gracefully, it has one or two knocks but I suspect they may be more apparent in a glossy finish... it looks like it's been stained with tea bags in a way, or whiskey, no fake tan treatment in any case! I believe Johnny Kinkead uses true oil now but I doubt he was using it in the eighties. Very nice finish though

Have you tried Tru-Oil Francis? No is the simple answer that... A drop or two of trew oil makes a great substitute for Angostura bitters in a gin and iron brew...

I was amazed when Colin Symonds told me that guitar I got from him at HB 2018 was oil finished with Liberon finishing oil. I’ve heard reports of people using Osmo oil on acoustic guitars I’ve used it on furniture and found it really easy to use but I can’t honestly say a brush applied finish is better than a multi coat rubbed finish

Oil finish tests pretty well complete now. The timbers are: Walnut, Yew and Western Red Cedar respectively. Six coats and a light burnish with a dry cotton cloth, this photo positions the reflection of the overhead LED strip light on the oiled area: This photo the reflection is positioned across the uncoated and coated junction. The initial sanding to #4000 grit Micro Mesh I think has given the sheen the oil has just enhanced the timber colouration...

The fretboard and neck were joined today - I'll start the final profiling in the morning. Little more work on the bridge and that too can be fitted to the body. Final big clean up before starting to apply the oil finish. Also trying out the hanger ready for the guitar to air dry between oil applications. Fretboard and bridge
