Congrats on the new build, Martin. All pics showing for me. Carving of the arch is very impressive. Just scrape away the bits that aren’t mandolin! Will watch with interest.

I love the clarity of your narration, Gary. The work’s not too shabby either. Keep the videos coming, please. Thanks.

Probably my favourite artist. Thanks for the link. I’m with you on Leonard Cohen too.

I think the rationale behind the dolphin bracing is to make it as light as possible but the height still gives enough strength. Probably takes much longer to profile them. The tops are still done the same way, just the back braces have changed on newer Avalon guitars. Mine are all new logo. Lowden necks (45mm) are slightly chunkier than Avalon (44.5mm), but I prefer the Avalon profile. I’ve played a Lowden like the one you mentioned - very nice but pricey. I can WhatsApp you photos or videos if you want to private message me? Can do so tomorrow, but will be away for a few days from Friday.

Hi surfguy13 The dolphin bracing is very slim and tall and is still used by Lowden. Avalon used it until a few years ago. They only changed the bracing on the guitar backs, as far as I’m aware. I have a Lowden O32 spruce rosewood and an Avalon A380 spruce cocobolo, both with Dolphin bracing and a jumbo Avalon cedar rosewood and an Avalon dreadnought spruce mahogany, both of which have the newer Avalon bracing. The new bracing is lower profile and thicker, more like Martin or Guild bracing. Bass is probably least prominent in the mahogany dread, probably more because of the mahogany than anything else. The dolphin bracing certainly doesn’t inhibit the bass in the Lowden jumbo or the Avalon auditorium. Avalon and Lowden guitars, TO MY EARS, are more balanced than the Martin or Guild guitars I’ve played. I find the American guitars have a more scooped midrange, which possibly makes them more suitable for accompanying vocals. I’m obviously a fan of Lowden and Avalon, so maybe not impartial enough,

B*gger indeed. You showed remarkable restraint to not verbalise it more strongly, or was that the result of editing? I enjoy the videos. Thanks, Gary.

I like Open D too, John. Good few Joni Mitchell songs in open D; Big Yellow Taxi, Conversation, Chelsea Morning and Both Sides Now are all fairly manageable. I also play Simple Twist of Fate, but it’s a bit repetitive without an instrumental break. My favourite to play at the moment in open D is Paul Brady’s Lakes of Ponchartrain, but mine is very basic compared to his version.

My ears are never out of tune but the ears of my listeners very often are. Seriously though, I do sometimes think my guitar sounds muffled - as if it has 20 year old strings on it. Then the next day will sound perfectly clear again. Must be down to my ears as everything else is constant. That reminds me of the Eric Roche quote, “There are no wrong notes, they’re just notes from other songs.” I get days when I just can’t seem to be able to tune the guitar, when the previous or following days it seems fine. My voice is a different story entirely. I use Keith’s E modal, 079900 and an A, x02255 to check tuning. Dm, xx0231can often highlight tuning imperfections too when other open chords sound fine.

Congrats,Paul. That’s some chord contortion in the first photo. Lovely looking guitar, Francis. So, how about some sound clips…
