RL Burnside "Come On In". 1998. He famously said on conviction for murder “I didn’t mean to kill nobody. I just meant to shoot the sonofabitch in the head. Him dying was between him and the Lord.” Some of his personality comes through in the music. R. L. is pretty much the reason I play guitar. Not sure I'd describe "Come On In" as acoustic though, what with all the Tom Rothrock electronic remixes! "1st Recordings", "Mississippi Hill Country Blues" & "Acoustic Stories" are probably the best places to hear him with an acoustic guitar. "Burnside on Burnside" is (IMHO) the greatest album ever recorded, but is all out electric with R.L. & Kenny Brown tearing it up. First Recordings is excellent and my favourite RL Burnside album.I love the grove the Mississippi Hill Country players have RL’s grandson Cedric is making great music too.

I’ve been back on the dark side for a while love electrics with cricket bat necks, as I play all guitars fingerstyle. I’ve still after 30 plus years playing guitar have never tried a Les Paul, my main electric is a ES335.

I saw Stefan Live in Sydney 10 years ago and his banter and performance was great. I’ve also attended two of his workshops which improved my playing no end. I’m waiting for my copy of this to land down under.

One of these, Forget about owning it though, I'd just like to see one in person. That is a very lovely looking & sounding guitar, but I don't recognise what it is? It’s a Larson Brothers guitar I think made in Chicago pre war. The guitarist is Andrew Lardner I support him on Patreon. he puts up a detailed lesson each month on tunes by Kottke, Fahey, Jansch, Blind Blake and Renbourn. Highly recommended and well worth a few dollars each month.

As a teenager I always wanted a Gibson ES 335. I bought one in 1989, gigged with it in a blues band for 10+ years. I remember the first time I played it loud through my Hiwatt amp, I could feel the air pumping out of the f holes. Great tone and great memories. I still have it but don't gig with a band any more. ES335 are my favourite electric guitars. I have one too.

I played a 1980’s Sobell arch top at an Eric Roche guitar workshop in the early 2000s that guitar was exceptional. I would like to own my own Sobell .
Though I have a British guitar currently being made and I’m lucky to own some amazing guitars.

Nope not a Fylde, though I like both suggestions.

Something coming from a UK Luthier. All I will say is like all my acoustics it will be 12 frets and a slotted headstock. I put the deposit down in 2020 and it’s currently being made.

I turned a big number this year and a few year ago I decided two order two guitars based on my two major influences Country Blues and UK fingerstyle folk. Country Blues. At the start of the pandemic I sold my two Waterloo guitars and missed the light weight ladder braced sound. I follow the Fretboard Journal podcast and a couple of years ago they interviewed Jack Tarlington of Wandering Boy Guitars. I liked his story and his guitars looked cool and were championed by Matt Sweeney one of my favourite players. It was great to find out that Jack is based in Australia too. Jack is also featured in Fretboard Journal issue 49. Fast forward to September and we are driving the 7 hours home from a family holiday at Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary back to Brisbane. Just before the Queensland border we stopped at Wandering Boy Guitars to pick up my new guitar. Didn’t stay too long as it was pouring and I had two kids under 10 wanting to get home and we still had over 2 hours left to drive. I wanted a small bodied guitar, ladder braced with a wide nut. All of Jack’s guitars are unique and are based on Vintage Stella guitars. I liked the floral decals on these original Guitars and Jack showed me some photos of an original Regal guitar with floral decals and we decided to go with his version of this. Old Sitka spruce top, Mahogany back and side and French polished. 13.25” lower bout 24.75” scale 1.8” nut Ladder braced Floral water-slide decal. Lovely V shape neck Beautiful multicolour purfling and rosette. I’ve had this guitar about 6 weeks and I’m really happy with it. It’s the lightest guitar I’ve owned and It’s very addictive to play with a great feeling neck. It’s allot louder than the small size belies and has a smaller body than my 00-12s. It’s great for Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnson picking and works well with a slide. It’s also good for Dave Rawling style playing and general fingerstyle. I just saw Steve Gunn live with his Martin in a small venue in Brisbane. Excellent gig and the first gig for my wife and me since the pandemic.

I use Santa Cruz strings predominately but today I just restrung my Wandering Boy guitar with Stringjoy strings (NGD post to come soon). First time I’ve tried these strings bought some for my electric as well.

Great thread. Here’s a few more;
I’d add every album by Kelly Joe Phelps, especially Lead Me On and Shine Eyed Mr Zen. 1922 and When the Devil Goes Blind by Charlie Parr ( he has a great back catalogue to discover] Turning of the Clocks by Shaun Cromwell. First Recordings by RL Burnside
I agree on Folk Singer by Muddy Walters and anything by Mississippi John Hurt.
Another obscure release I have on vinyl is I am the Black Ace by Black Ace who was a lapslide National player.

I had a Michael Messer destroyed in shipping to me when a forklift prong went through the box, the case and mangled the neck and cone. There was briefly a dealer down under for them. I did own a Mule tricone for a few years , great guitar though it’s was very heavy. My favourite resonator though is the National El Trovodor. I prefer wooden bodies as their lighter. I play slide and I currently prefer ladder braced acoustics for that.

This is a great thread as I’ve recently rediscovered playing electric, particularly with my wolfram slide.

That’s a hard question. Mississippi Fred McDowell, Dwayne Allman, Derek Trucks, Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder. I can’t pick a favourite, then there’s Kelly Joe Phelps, Joey Landreth, Charlie Parr, I could go on and on. I just love slide guitar. No Jack Rose on the list?
I forgot Jack, doh!
