Hope Joe won't mind me nicking the handover photos from his thread to kick off this one! Joe had a dreadful traffic plagued journey over to Somerset, not reaching his weekend b&b pub in Street until early evening, so I met him in that pub to do the handover. Good to see Joe again and to talk mandolins and recordings and such. Joe mentioned various rattles and buzzes persisting despite his remedial action to the saddle and some nut fettling from Dave. When I got the mando home I found myself producing fewer rattles and buzzes than Joe, but then he does play hard with a thick plectrum, whereas I use a thin one in a fairly wimpy fashion. But it was still obvious that as a result of the very new instrument "settling down", some attention to the nut and the saddle was going to be helpful in sorting it out. Talking it over with Dave on the phone he kindly suggested he and Debbie could have a day out in Somerset this week and fit a new nut, saddle, and hopefully tailpiece too, as this forces some of the strings to take an excessively angled path over the saddle, as has been mentioned before. In the meantime though, I have still been enjoying getting to know CBT, and already I really enjoy the extra fretboard width this instrument has - it really does make a big difference to ease of fingering in many instances. Had a good evening jamming with CBT while Glyn played guitar yesterday too, and very much enjoyed the sound and the feel of CBT. Looks like an enjoyable time in prospect and I'll keep you informed of course! I did manage a couple of quick recordings this morning - both are using previously recorded guitar/mandolin multitrack efforts - I just played the main melody on CBT in each case and substituted it for the pre-existing Fylde mandomelody in a remix. Here's Calum's Road (written Donald Shaw), with CBT backed by my Fylde Alex - www.box.com/s/ebhwp6qw2vnl3qxvdlp8 And also one of my own tunes, Elenor's, which has CBT playing the main melody throughout, plus two backing guitar tracks ( andyw 's Orsino)and a harmony part (Fylde Walnut Touchstone mandolin) - www.box.com/s/4roygrttgmpf2yzh2uviKeith

Love those two pieces, Keith ... especially "Elenor" which rather fits my melancholy mood today...

Keith, I'm glad Joe finally managed to find and reach The Republic of Somerset and it was a nice touch meeting up in a pub - especially one that serves Metal Polish Cracking start - lovely tunes but especially "Elenor's". You could do another book for mandolins with backing tracks to play along to See you tomorrow.

Thanks Leo and Dave.
Leo - hope the day goes OK - I'll try and have some chirpy tunes up soon!
Dave - never got as far as a book, but did once do several tunes as full mixes and backing track(s) only, plus mandotab for the tune - only v rough efforts though for a friend who was learning - she'd been leant a Paul Shippey mandolin which was gorgeous! Some of the local rough cider is remarkably close to being metal polish....

As promised Leo, here is a chirpy tune - Dill Pickle Rag - www.box.com/s/7hnw5w1bqg012op1c7rpA bit too chirpy for me really, hence the timing is a bit unintentinally ragged in places, and there are several goofs which at this speed fortunately don't last for long! This is another old recording with the Davidson mandolin that was there with my Fylde Alex muted to make way for CBTs morning run! Keith

Thanks Dave - I found the wider fingerboard especially helpful on Dill Pickle as there are several places where I need to hold down a two or three finger "shape" and add/subtract fingers repeatedly - there's room to do this easily on CBT without collisions of fingers Captain Pugwash? Maybe - usually foul up the triplets big-time on that, but we'll see. Might well do The Black Pig sometime though. Keith

Enjoying the recordings so far Keith - Calum's Road is one of my favourites and sounds good played either mournfully or more jauntily as you have it here. The Rag sounds like fun to play I may have to learn that one, and Elenor's is a great composition if you'd said it was a famous trad tune by some crusty old harper I would not have doubted it!

From a crusty old guitar player, thanks v much Joe for your encouragement! Glad you're enjoying the tunes. Dave (and Debbie) came over today, and while Debbie went off in search of a wooden box (don't ask!) Dave set up White's Workshop on our kitchen table. His tailpiece experimenting is coming on well, but has a way to go yet, so the tailpiece remains the same, but now CBT is sporting a new nut and a new saddle. These are both slightly higher than the previous ones and have slots which allow a slightly greater space between the two members of each string pair. I'll see how the new setup works out for a short while before reassessing properly - feels ever so slightly high at both ends, but is perfectly playable. The whole instrument rings better now and has no untoward rattles, buzzes or sitar-like resonances. Nice! Here's a tune I've just recorded thisafto on the newly fettled CBT to a pre-existing guitar track on Fylde Alex from a while back. I only know the tune as Hambo, which is a Swedish dance, so I suppose it has a more specific name somewhere or other, but anyway, here is Hambo! www.box.com/s/9mww48g0pkh4qi5mbb8qThanks v much Dave for taking the trouble to provide such an excellent domicilliary luthiery tech service! Hope you both had an enjoyable drive back. Keith (and yes, Debbie did manage to get a v nice old wooden box (including a selection of old tools which Dave will no doubt appropriate!)

Mobile Luthiery Service will travel. Yes we're back safely and I feel slightly high at both ends too Thanks for a lovely lunch and CBT sounds pretty good. Off to have a closer look at the wooden planes Debbie "accidentally" bought

Loved Hambo, CBT is certainly doing a world tour of music on this road trip! I think I'm hearing a bit more projection after the re-set-up?
I just spent a good hour trying to find your Hambo on youtube, thesession, or anywhere else - no luck. I'm guessing an E minor tune with that G# surprise might be a more modern session tune, though there's plenty of trad tunes with key shifts so who knows?

Thanks Joe - I suspect that after the new nut/saddle I'm playing a bit more firmly, perhaps because of the v slightly higher action and the certainty there won't be any buzzes! Glad you liked Hambo - it's a tune my elder daughter (from whom I learned it) brought back from one of her visits to the fiddle school run by Blazin' Fiddles a few years ago - I've checked her bumf from then, and the proper title is Riippusillan Hambo and it appears on the Live album by Blazin' Fiddles, and the album History by By Arto Järvelä & Phillip Page (JPP) Here's a snippet I turned up which confirms your feeling that it is a relatively modern tune - Riippusillan Hambo -- Riippu Bridge Hambo (Arto Järvelä) This Swedish-flavored hambo was composed in 1987, inspired by a hanging bridge, called Riippusilta, in the village of Järvelä, nearby the house of Arto's grandfather. Arto was affected by the beauty and the rhythmic feedback of the bridge. Its composers play it here - very nicely! - grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q=JPP+Riippusillan+Hambo+%28Riippu+Bridge+Hambo%29 (sorry, you'll have to paste the whole link into another window - tried several ways to make it work as a direct link, but couldn't seem to manage it!) Just finished mixing another tune I recorded this morning - it's a simple but quirky waltz - Chinese Waltz - www.box.com/s/fqn30fp4b624xdhx0ggiCBT takes the melody and an overdubbed harmony, whilst FT (Sapele Butterfly Road Trip guitar)with capo at fret 7 tinkers away in the background. Usual Zoom H2 as USB mic, flat eq, minimal room reverb. Don't know who wrote this one, (it came from a friend's book for whistle I think)but the harmony part is home-grown. (And, misplayed for a couple of notes near the end, resulting in unwanted unison that I didn't notice till it was all mixed and uploaded etc.) Keith

It also says a great deal for Butterfly that she can sound so fantastic with a capo on 7!

Keith, I was trying to imagine what a Chinese Waltz would sound like but it's definitely evocative of China. Masterful choice of mandolin harmonies to make it sound that way too. FT sounds nice too. Love it.
