No matter how many times I listened to Chinese Waltz, an hour later I needed to listen to it again!

Lovely tune, Keith, very oriental sounding. CBT sounds excellent, really nice and crisp and clear, and FT (as always) just sounds sublime - beautiful piece. Great Sunday morning listening.

Just finished mixing another tune I recorded this morning - it's a simple but quirky waltz - Chinese Waltz - www.box.com/s/fqn30fp4b624xdhx0ggiCBT takes the melody and an overdubbed harmony, whilst FT (Sapele Butterfly Road Trip guitar)with capo at fret 7 tinkers away in the background. Usual Zoom H2 as USB mic, flat eq, minimal room reverb. Don't know who wrote this one, (it came from a friend's book for whistle I think)but the harmony part is home-grown. (And, misplayed for a couple of notes near the end, resulting in unwanted unison that I didn't notice till it was all mixed and uploaded etc.) Keith What a lovely sounding arrangement this is Keith, you have a great musical talent. The guitar and mandolin compliment each other perfectly. Have you had any 'proper' musical training? Both instruments sound great How does the CBT compare to the Fylde mando? Forsyth's had a Fylde plus some others on there stand yesterday at the Pendle Guitar Festival. Regards Phil

Thnaks Phil.
As for "proper" musical training, the answer is no - my original "tutors" were Bert Weedon (Play in a Day) and my Shadows, Beatles and Ralph McTell LPs (lots of stylus flipping) and my ears - which I still use! Learned a lot from being a regular floor singer at my local folk club in th 1960s and from various collaborations with lots of folk (though hardly any guitar players) with considerably more ability than I have.
The PendleFest sounds good Phil. Did you have a go of any mandolins? CBT and my Fylde are certainly different in feel and sound, both equally lovely, but I'll say more when it comes to reviewing CBT properly I think. Now you come to mention it, I might do a recording where the two take it in turns, then you can hear for yourself!

So, a video of CBT at last! My arrangements of two trad airs The Lark In the Clear Air and Singing Bird, (subtitled Killing Two Birds with one Tune) - I gave up trying to get one good take of both tunes one after the other without falling out of the nest, so I did them separately and joined them up afterwards. Pity the sun had moved around a bit by the second one! I had intended to do some repeats on the vid, but thought it was pushing my luck.I have, though, edited the sound recording of the chirrupings to put in some repeats and make a longer job - www.box.com/s/tw49xupyxarn5l8azkzrA fair bit of heavy breathing here and there, and the odd faltering mid-flight, so please beak ind to me! Keith

Keith, Gorgeous stuff - I haven't heard those two airs before but that was a lovely arrangement nicely played with space and elegance as all good airs should be. I really liked the longer version with the repeats on the sound file. Lots of scope for a mandolin duet with counterpoint or maybe a guitar. I'm going to have to transcribe those for future use

Love the video Keith - very neat hybrid picking technique (pick + fingerstyle) on the second tune I think? Not something I've ever master on guitar, or even dared to try on mando!

Dave - ta muchly! Glad you like the tunes/arrangements - they are only in my head, so feel free to transcribe. I enjoy their simplicity too, and they are fun to play - except when trying to video them!! Singing Bird was a song I got from one of those "Sing Out" books that were around in the 1960s - my mate used to sing it while I played guitar and sang - in 1967/8 ish we managed to come second in the "Folk" category at a music festival competition in Stoke-on-Trent with our rendition. An achievement tempered somewhat by the fact that there were only three entrants. Joe - thanks! - hybrid picking is something I do a fair bit on guitar - not for solo instrumental things, but to allow me to have different accompanying styles within the same sung item. On this mando piece it wasn't as successful as it should have been - I find it hard to strike consistently both strings of the top course and more often hit just one. Leo - could be a hornpipe or two in the pipeline...maybe a strathspey or even a mazurka..... Keith

Keith I did'nt try a mando Keith - don't want to get MAS since Lynne hates the sound of them. When I thought I would not be able to play guitar again after my left wrist problems I bought an Eastman which my friend now has. The recording you suggest sounds a good idea Cheers Phil ps the Lark video is super stuff - love mando played like this

Thanks Phil! I haven't got the comparison recording done yet, but I have done a vid with some hornpipes (sorry Leo!) - Tunes are Harvest Home (trad), The Boys of Bluehill (trad), and The Black Pig (one of mine). FT provides a basic backing track. Apols for the jerky joins between the tunes - joining them "properly" on Windows MovieMaker just didn't work - bits got missed out/overlapped. The audio only recording which has proper transitions between the tunes is here - www.box.com/s/vx54bem6ny1wgys2bpuaKeith
