Well, unless you count "I like it a lot, and it's good as well..." as adequate, I still haven't yet done my review of CBT. I have, though, finished mixing the CBTx3 multitrack version of Tanya's, a tune I wrote (with obvious influences) some years ago for fiddle and guitar. Here's the audio track - www.box.com/s/8cjtyrkzu2wdxmqwksoxand here, using a load of pics I took last week for a backdrop, is a video version - Unusually for me, I loved the "new string" sound on this instrument. I will get a review written... I really will... Keith

Keith, Lovely - nice interplay of the three parts and a nice composition. Lovely crisp sound although in the B part there's something that sounds like a bee doing a clog dance inside CBT Interesting. Nice photo montage in the video too. I've loved the music you and CBT have made together and that initial review is perfectly fine with me

Ta muchly Dave and Phil!
Dave - bees clog-dancing? Nah, just a tone faerie playing the bodhran!!
But I know what you mean - most likely my poor technique - my right hand scraping injudiciously across the bridge/soundboard on the quicker picked string crossing bits - I was playing quietly for the tone I wanted, and recording with the Zoom very close - probably picked up some mechanical noise from that and/or my headphone cable rubbing/tapping against SBTs body. It was too late to redo anything by the time I'd realised. Ah well!
Phil - have a great time in Spain - "...you can go, but be back soon..." Hope you can still keep in touch whilst away, or will Mrs PCT57 impose an internet ban whilst on holiday?
Keith

The energy of the playing is much better than a clinically engineered version and the image of the Tone Faeries playing bhodran is just too perfect

Magnificent, Keith ... just sublime. I'd tap my feet but that would constitute exercise and I'm allergic to exercise. my FaceBook choon of the day

Well, unless you count "I like it a lot, and it's good as well..." as adequate, I still haven't yet done my review of CBT...... Keith ............................ I've loved the music you and CBT have made together and that initial review is perfectly fine with me Having just had a brief re-acquaintance with CBT has reminded me that you deserve more than the short review above Dave! So, without going OTT into reams of stuff, to that I would add - Appearance - beautifully chosen and assembled woods - no unnecessary flash, just luscious woodiness. The bubinga back is very 3-D looking in the right light and at the right angles. A very elegant looking instrument I think. All the wood colours complement each other perfectly. The "anterior" strap button isn't where I'd put it from the aesthetic point of view, but works well functionally. Playing comfort - the brief was to produce a "guitarist friendly" mandolin - result - success! The longer than most scale length helps to some degree, but the wider string spacing based around a 34mm f/b width at nut is the real winner for me. Some mandolins are 28mm which I find very cramped; my Fylde is 30mm which is much better, but the 34mm of CBT gives a much airier feel and allows me to finger very easily and successfully some chord shapes that I find tricky on my Fylde. The spacing didn't seem to hinder my tune playing, though admittedly that isn't as fast as I would like to begin with. The guitar sized fretwork is very neat, and allows an easy playing feel and a low action with no untoward noises - this could well still be a work in progress as CBT settles down. Dave was kind enough to put a new nut and saddle on CBT after Joe had passed it on. I subsequently shimmed the saddle a tiny bit to elimimate a couple of slight buzzes on the D and A pairs. When I passed it on to Ben I thought I should maybe have gone a little higher at the saddle, but when CBT returned a few weeks later it felt and sounded just fine. As the f/b is curved, maybe it might help to have the A and D pairs set slightly higher at the saddle than the G and E pairs? The binding around the top is a little sharp, and can cause some forearm discomfort - a minor point and one which could easily be remedied. The tailpiece is the only problem really, and that was due to suppliers changing their spec. The G and E string pairs are forced to take a fairly sideways angled path over the saddle which looks odd, but also makes it difficult to get a properly notched saddle to reroute the string well, and hold it laterally and give a clean exit from the saddle. I believe Dave is looking to change the tailpiece, having sourced some which will allow a more suitable string spacing. The wound strings are lightish for a mando, (intentionally so) and I tended to find them feeling slightly loose compared to the unwound strings. Maybe I'd have done a little experimentation (Dave did supply some slightly heavier Gs) given longer. I'd especially like to try a slightly lighter A pair to even out the transition from wound to unwound. Sound - full of character - loud, sustaining, chiming, rich. Well, you've heard it, at least in the recordings. The deeper than usual body adds richness I'm sure. The resulting sound, especially strummed on not new strings has an almost guitar-like quality to it somehow thanks to the sustain - I liked that. With new strings the sound is very clear and crisp yet still richer than you'd expect. Very much liked the sounds this instrument is capable of producing! The soundport helps the player to appreciate the sound all the more. Very responsive instrument, as you'd expect from Mr White. Other stuff - CBT comes in a rectangular Hiscox mandolin case - light and strong, with a huge amount of storage space for straps and strings, sandwiches, underwear etc. plus Dave's usual "case candy" - build CD and instrument leaflet. I really enjoyed my time with CBT - a characterful, easy to play and great sounding instrument. In fact, as I said before, I like it a lot, and it's good as well! Thanks again for the chance of experiencing CBT Dave! I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing how other Road Trip participants get on with CBT. Also hope that Andrew (jw), who hadn't made it back from his travels in time to get his go, will be able to slot in somewhere else along the line. CBT will shortly be moving on to Paul (scorpiodog)after a short pitstop at Dave's. So, having finally got this done, I can turn my full attention to CBM! Keith

Keith, Great review - thanks for your time and trouble and for the fabulous music you made together - including a tune written for me. It's still very much a learning curve for me with mandolins and the string gauges that will work best are a personal thing with each player and might require some experimentation. I know the range of string tension that drive my tops best and give the sustain and timbre I'm after and I use a string gauge tension calculator (aka an Excel spreadsheet) to settle on the gauges. I've used both 0.030" and 0.032" on the bottom G string of my own CB III and haven't fully decided which works best yet. I was going to try some 0.014" for the A for Paul rather than the 0.015" but have used all the ones I had on your CBM . Setting string height at the nut on such short scale instruments has been another learning curve but I'm getting the hang now and your comments on the saddle profile helped on the one I did for CBM. CBT seems to be playing nicely now though. The tailpiece was a whole saga on its own. I ordered the same one I'd used on my first three mandolins for CBT and didn't notice any difference (if I made lots more mandos it would have been more apparent) until Joe pointead out at the East Anglian Guitar Festival that it was a bigger tailpiece than on his CB II. I had a chat with David Dyke and it seems that the German supplier had changed the design so that the same overall shape could be used for the 8, 10 and 12 string options that they made and didn't tell him. The 8 string new one was a lot bigger. I bought some of the old style 12 string tailpieces from David and when they arrived they were only a fraction larger than the old 8 string ones but more interestingly were slightly lighter in weight and by leaving gaps the 12 string setting could be used to give a much straighter string path across the saddle. I used one of these on your CBM, fitted one to my CB III where it worked well and today I changed out the tailpiece on CBT for one of these. Here's the before: And here's the after: Much better. CBT is now all "fettled up" and Debbie and I are having a Dorset Day on Wednesday and will meet up with Paul (scorpiodog) in Wimborne for lunch and to handover CBT.
