Thanks Dave - glad you approve. I like hornpipes too; in fact I tend to play some reels a bit "dotted" sometimes too, and I really liked the lilt that Joe ( Mike Floorstand)brought to some of his recordings on tunes that are more frequently played "straight". Keith

Lovely. What a sweet sound you've achieved. But if that's the best you can do for a mistake, then you need some training!!!

Here's the comparison between CBT and my Fylde Walnut Touchstone that Phil asked for - www.box.com/s/uky307uf6b5epx0omzkwAfter the 4-bar intro, and beginning with CBT, CBT and FWT take 8 bars each alternating throughout. The tune is in AABB format, so CBT has A-B-A-B- (twice) and FWT has -A-B-A-B (twice). Hope that makes sense. FT strummage throughout. Zoom H2 as USB mic, flat eq, tiny bit of room reverb on final mix. Both mando recorded at same distance from Zoom and no adjustment to their relative volumes. The tune is Balquhidder Lasses - a tune claimed by the English and also by the Scots, so it's not only a mando shoot-out!! I'm saying nothing.....yet! Keith

Great tune and fantastic playing Keith! The thing that impressed me most is how you managed to put one mando down and pick the other one up to continue the tune without missing a beat!

Keith, Nice tune - must be English with a title like that (a misspelling of Blackadder perchance ). Seamless handover between the two instruments as Joe says and definitely a difference in the sound between them. Both nice though.

Thanks Joe and Dave! Yup, quite a big difference in sound, and it shows up on the waveforms on Cakewalk too - interesting!
Had a bit of fun with some pics as well, so here's a vid which shows which instruments are playing - the change-overs are almost in the right places!

The CBT is a fuller sound than the Fylde if I have got it right. Is CBT bigger or is it down to the woods perhaps? Phil

Thanks Phil - glad you enjoyed it - it was fun to do!
Well, CBT is spruce/bubinga and FWT is cedar/walnut; CBT has a slightly greater body volume, and has much lighter wound strings, but I'd guess that the builder is the major factor in the sound differences. To me, CBT seems janglier and more resonant sounding, FWT sweeter and "politer" somehow. Both lovely sounds, both lovely to play. The only downside is that I can now see a good reason for having more than one mandolin.......

So, this morning I was supposed to be rearranging a few paving stones and gravel in the back garden. I thought, b*gger it, and did this instead - Much more fun. CBT and FT with three tunes, Gypsy Lullaby (by piper Billy Pigg) and two well known session tunes, Chief O'Neill's Favourite (trad hornpipe) and The Merry Blacksmith (trad reel). No joins this time, but only once through each tune - daren't try to be too clever and do twice! Audio file is here - www.box.com/s/ttledrbiameqseyyj6rtDid actually get round to the paving stones etc thisafto while the vid was uploading, so I still got my Brownie points from Mrs O'C as well. A grand day! Keith

Keith, Excellent - great set of tunes played very nicely. Even more impressive was the landscape gardening multi-tasking.

Thanks Dave - maybe I should have played The Gravel Walks! There's one more tune I'd like to record, but, despite it being one of mine, I can't play it very well at all just yet, so lots of frantic practice to do in the hope I'll get it cracked (The tune, not CBT)in time to record it before meeting up with jackorion on Sunday to pass CBT on to him . That last vid was great! I think I'll have some fun with this mando but don't hold your breath for any videos of that quality!
