A lovely sound there, Mr White - and one that you reckon will improve further with the application of a finish ... tasty

I want one that is modified so I can play it standing up, with a strap, like a guitar. I saw one once, I can't remember what was modified but it didn't look much different from a normal dulcimer. Hmmmm.... I have one of these: www.walkaboutdulcimer.comYou can hear it here: Cheers

Probably a daft question, but why are the frets spread out like that?

Probably a daft question, but why are the frets spread out like that? Mountain dulcimers have a diatonic scale and the original ones had a scale that went tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, semitone, tone. On a guitar this is like playing frets 2,4,5,7,9,10 and 12. Later on what is called the "six and a half" fret was added before the octave giving tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, semitone, semitone, semitone or in guitar terms frets 2,4,5,7,9,10,11,12. Other frets have been added and you can get totally chromatic mountain dulcimers but this seems to take away from the original character and simplicity of the instrument.
