Anyone have any experience, tips, pointers on what to look for in a Mountain Dulcimer? There seem to be a few cheap ones out there which I don't fancy. McSpadden & Red Kite are available in limited supply in the UK, any others worth a look?
Cheers Vic

Vic, The first instrument I ever made was a dulcimer from a kit sold by Hobgoblin that I "customised": I'm afraid I don't know much about ones for sale here but I'd quite fancy making another one.

Beans! Spill 'em Vic! Keith Well, Dave is going to build me an 'Hourglass' Mountain Dulcimer, final specs tbc. But along the lines of European Spruce over Sapele, 25.5" scale, 6 1/2 fret diatonic layout. It will of course be very special. This won't come together for a couple of months so more info when we get to the build stage. Cheers

Excellent, Vic! Can't wait to hear more about it when the time comes. Such diversification! Next thing you know, Dave will be building a banjo!

Hurrah! That sounds like a cracking build and I look forward to seeing the build thread... I hope you'll be bringing it to HB5/ASBO2 Looks like Dave is going to be fairly busy for a while...

I want one that is modified so I can play it standing up, with a strap, like a guitar. I saw one once, I can't remember what was modified but it didn't look much different from a normal dulcimer.
Hmmmm....
