Hey up - those are fine competition entries Leo and Alex. Leo - makes a change to hear a recording with no vocal and there's some great resonances going on there. I do like playing open G and can appreciate the skills you've used to weave the chords and runs in that number and to get that melody. Alex - what are the chances that with just three entries so far two have vocals referring to mining! Sorry - no intention of treading on your turf, but I had been avoiding looking at the other entries until after I'd posted my song - so I've just found out. There's a real energy in the playing of your song and great story too. That was a real challenge you gave yourself doing the single condenser microphone one take recording - achieved with flying colours! Good luck everyone. Mark

What a great idea! Is there a closing date for this?

Hope I haven't missed the deadline. And is it within the rules to enter a song which I have already written but which hasn't been recorded or performed in public yet?

No, it has to be written specifically for the competition That's a shame. Never mind I'll put it on the Plucky Duck at some point :-)

vikingblues, there's clearly a strong storyline behind your song - miners or not. DADGAD, well, most alternative tunings, befuddle me so I can appreciate any composition which makes use of them! Best of luck to you.

Good one Mark ( vikingblues)- something of an old trad ballad vibe going there, excellent. Keith

Best of luck to you. Thanks Leo - the DADGAD playing has been helped a good bit by Rob MacKillops book. Best of luck to you too. Three good entries so far, chaps! Well done It's rolling along nicely, and I can't wait to hear what's up next Three very different entries too in style. I'm keen to hear what's up next too - methinks there's some heavyweight writers waiting in the wings! Talking of which .... Good one Mark ( vikingblues)- something of an old trad ballad vibe going there, excellent. Keith Thanks Keith - aye - "old and trad" (rather like me). Look forward to hearing what you have up your sleeve. Mark

Mine mentions a friend who went down the pit. For a bit.
Again, apologies if I don't listen to the other entries until the competition's over, folks. I'm so insecure about my vocals that I've been known to pull recordings in the past, and I think hearing people who can actually sing would scare me half to death.

I've lost count of how many times I've mentioned my liking for your vocal style Pete, and though I know it won't make you feel any differently about your voice, I did enjoy hearing it again on your competition entry that I've just listened to.
(It has to be said that there are only a very few people who actually are content with their own singing voice.)
What a superb subject you chose for this song, and one that must resonate with many people, including me. I read the words before listening, and found them quite moving, as many of your lyrics are. The jauntiness of the arrangement didn't entirely hide this wistful nostalgia - thankfully. Great to hear songs sung from the heart Pete. Thank you.

I find my thoughts are very similar to Keiths on your competition entry Pete. I would never have thought of combining that sort of playing style (not that I could play like that so fluently) with your lyrics - the way you've done it works so very well. It is very much from the heart and there is a real wistful air to the song - the quality of the word skills is really high. I certainly found it very moving. I'd add to that for me the qualities of the vocal are great too - just right for the song. It would be a great shame to pull this recording. So ... four very different entries now! Mark
