It's played on my Fylde Custom Alexander tuned DADGBE (exotic eh?!) Reminds me of that Joni Mitchell joke, —I don't know what this tuning is? Why Joni, it's what we call standard tuning :-) Mind you it doesn't get much better than Dropped D! EDIT - andyhowell - this post should be in the Competition Comments Section - I should be able to move it for you, but for some reason that section doesn't appear on my options of places to move it to. Please could you repost iin the correct section, and then I'll delete this one! Thanks Andy. Keith EDIT by Martin. Post now moved to correct section.

scotch, nicely done, Chris ... quite melancholic, I thought ... and that's a cracking recording for an mobile phone video! Best of luck with the competition.

Just listening to the composition of scotch. That is an interesting tuning - and it's produced an interesting sounding piece of music that has a real mood to it. Very nicely done and good luck. Sorry to hear about your PC. It can be a lot of fun playing around with a very different tuning. Although some of the strings remain normal tuning and that makes it easier I used to enjoy the Spider Capo for the fun of a sort of different tuning and must explore it again soon. Mark

Oooooh....competition's closing tonight! Santa, we've been good, honest we have! (Well, goodish...). I clearly had no concept ( I I do now, though!) of the amount of dedication and effort that goes into making a quality guitar - to think I was worried about getting an entry in in time back in October!! It's been fascinating watching the build progress and thank you so much to colins for making this all possible and giving us a reason to get off our bottoms and create some original music. Very best of luck and a Merry Xmas to one and all!

After one false start, Joe and I both headed up to Dave's for the presentation of his prize coasters, with a bonus guitar thrown in. Joe seemed genuinely pleased with his coasters, but we eventually got him to look at the guitar, and more importantly play it. That was really my favourite part of the whole building process to finally get to hear it sing, Joe of course is a great player and really did the guitar justice. Joe and Dave will probably be on with their impressions (I think he liked it ), but I was really pleased with how the guitar sounds Joe did let Dave have a go as well, so I had the double pleasure of hearing two great players. I had to get in on the act as well, though I can't play I do add a certain gravitas and class to any picture I'm in. I did tell Joe that if he likes the guitar, then let everyone know what they missed, but if he doesn't well just keep quite! It was great meeting up with Joe and of course Dave and Debbie again. Lovely pics! It would have been nice to see a pic of the coasters in use rather just in a pile, but I'm sure Joe will give us a full road Test report about their suitability for bearing different types of beverage, their handling qualities and their likely durability. The guitar? Looks superb, and great to see it being held! Looking forward to hearing it, and reading a full report from Joe especially. Colin, you give good gravitas - thanks for that! But thanks tremendulantly for your generosity and skill in coming up with the competition and treating us all to a superb build thread to produce such a fine looking instrument. Keith

Lovely day - the highlight seeing Joe's face when he opened the case: The guitar is lovely, beautiful to look at and sounds fabulous - great balance across the strings and up and down the neck and a deep big bass. It worked well in standard tuning fingerpicked and strummed and also in DADGAD. It's a great all round guitar - kudos Colin and lucky Joe. I took a few video clips of Joe getting acquainted and playing that I'll send to Joe and Colin and Joe may post if they are OK (I don't do Youtube)and I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing Joe's recordings/videos with the guitar in the future. Another great chance to catch up with Colin and Joe was chuckling quietly as us two Grump Old Luthier Farts talked shop

Lovely pics! It would have been nice to see a pic of the coasters in use rather just in a pile, but I'm sure Joe will give us a full road Test report about their suitability for bearing different types of beverage, their handling qualities and their likely durability. Well I haven't had much opportunity to test my prize under different conditions but it's looking very good so far. One significant advantage is that several of my plectrums, which tend to blend in to the background on our dining table, have much better visibility when placed on one of the coasters, as this photo shows:
I think the guitar itself is best suited to fingerstyle playing, but it's good to keep the picks handy (and visible!) on a coaster, for whenever I feel the urge to switch to another instrument. Although that is probably not going to be very often, for the foreseeable future...
