... still catching up on listening to the earlier entries: David Hutton - a brooding song with nicely matched accompaniment, especially liked the hammer-ons in the melody and bits of walking bass, none of it overdone and all really effective. The kind of song Johnny Cash would have covered were he still alive! Wild Violet the rhythmic guitar really drives the song along but actually the song's own melody has a fascinating momentum of it's own. I like the way the melody starts to twist on the third couplet of the verse and again in the fourth, signposting the chorus which is about to start but without giving anything away. This is an intelligent song which bears repeated listening, and if I ever take up songwriting I'm coming to you for lessons! Phil Taylor stunning piece of work the opening section in particular is full of the most beautiful flowing melodies, and the short strummed sections which punctuate the alternating bass rhythm of the rest of the tune provides some effective variety. One for the headphones, and definitely one of my favourites. bobcarter - thanks for the tab! I'll try to get the basics under my fingers and get back to you if I have any questions - probably in about 18 months

colins I can't believe I forgot to mention that our childhood ritual of sliding down the banks of Herringthorpe Beck and falling into the stream was actually intended as a celebration, indeed homage, to the flightless Barnacle Gosling jumping off a cliff ledge. I also remember the streambed was often home to a collection of discarded bottles almost certainly including whisky (although to be fair I don't actually remember seeing an actual Talisker bottle).

Just listening to your entry now, earwighoney. Very atmospheric with lots of luscious, shimmery open strings! Nicely played too

'wig- your composition certainly rekindles my interest in synesthetic perceptions . Do you experience chromesthesia yourself ? I've listened to it several times and it retains my interest - just like a continuing interest in a good painting. Nice one. I can imagine it featuring on your future album ' Room 46'

Just been listening to the new entry by earwighoney. It has rather a modern sound with a degree of dissonance but there is enough that isn't dissonant to make it pleasing to listen to. It is, as Martin mentions, also atmospheric, which ticks a priority box for me. Can anyone enlighten me on this tuning - not one I've encountered before. What a wide range of styles there is in this competition! MArk

earwighoney, that was a lovely clear recording of what sounded a particularly intricate piece! I'm glad that colins didn't make the provision of tab a condition of entry - I suspect you are doubly so Good luck in the competition.

earwighoney - what an evocative and sensual piece! It's not generally the kind of stuff I go for, but your recording did draw me in and held my interest - I'd also love to hear it played over a series of close-ups taken from the painting, but imagining that is pretty good too! Keith

Thank you to everyone who listened to my track and to those who commented. It means a lot to me.
Colan, In a Ralph Wiggum moment synethesia and chromesthesia are all words I don't understand, but google as ever is friend. I'm not sure if I have chromesethesia or not! It took me a while to work out what is 'Room 46'! Another Ralph Wiggum moment there. It's a great room, and I love the National Gallery; one of my favourite things in London.
Mark, The tuning isn't one I was aware of but I'm sure someone has used it before I did! I came to from tinkering with CGDGCD tuning. I think some of the dissonance may due there being Ab and G open strings?
Leo, Pleased you liked the sound of the recording. I was using a microphone that was less than ideal but I've found a wonderful EQ plugin that works wonders! As for a tab, I have a scrawl of numbers and lines to form rough tab of sorts which I imagine to most would be incomprehensible!
Keith, Thank you for the compliments and for saying my piece kept your interest.
Phil, Thank you for the kind words.
