For the first Cheltenham Acoustic Guitar Show in 2007 I made a new model called “Samhain Cheltenham” which was a short scale (630mm) 13 frets clear of the body guitar using my Grand Concert sized “Samhain” body and a Florentine cutaway. This guitar had Black Limba back and sides and was immediately “claimed” by my youngest daughter. The mahogany neck was never a good match visually for the Black Limba and last year I got hold of some Black Limba to make a matching new neck for her guitar. This left me with a spare neck and in the first three months of this year I made a new body for it using a European Spruce top, Bubinga back and sides with Black Limba bindings and took the opportunity to re-design slightly the cutaway shape. This new guitar – “Samhradh”, the Gaelic for summer pronounced Sow-roo or Sow-rah – is replacing “Samhain Cheltenham” in my range. I want to use this guitar as a prize in a competition for talented young performing musicians and I also want to use it as an opportunity to help grow the Acoustic Soundboard Forum membership and get more participants there of a different age and outlook perhaps to the current core and Martin has kindly allowed me to use the Acoustic Soundboard Forum for this purpose.
I’ve been giving the process some thought and have decided to keep it as simple as possible. Entrants have to be under 25 years old, resident in the UK and pursuing or about to pursue a career in making music using an acoustic guitar either solo or in a group. To enter the competition you need to sign up as an Acoustic Soundboard member and make a post in the Competitions section of the forum with title "De Faoite Competition - Your Name" with:
• links videos/soundtracks representative of your music
• tell the Forum about you/your group with your history, plans and gigs etc
• outline why you want to be professional a musicians and why/how “Samhradh” would help you
• agree to answer where reasonable any questions posted by other Acoustic Soundboard members
If you win the Competition you also agree to keep being active Acoustic Soundboard member and keep us up to date as your career progresses
“Samhradh” will be on display at my stand at the East Anglia Guitar Festival on Sunday 5th May and potential competition participants are also welcome to arrange to come and see me to see/play it. I will decide who gets “Samhradh” but will do this in conjunction with other Acoustic Soundboard members that will I select, and maybe we can also do a “peoples vote” in the Members area of the Forum. Closing date for entries will be mid August 2013 and the plan would be to present “Samhradh” to the winner at the Halifax ASBO1 meeting at the end of September. Where possible I’ll get Forum members that are willing to make recordings on “Sahmradh” and post them in the Competition section – Joe (MikeFloorstand) was visiting on Saturday and had a little play.
Martin has kindly set up a separate section on the Forum for the entries that Martin/Keith will to police to make sure it is just competition entrants threads and Q/A’s that are posted there. If potential entrants have any queries they can pm me at the Forum or e-mail me at: samhradh at defaoiteguitars dot com.
This could be a “slow burner” or even a total damp squib, but I would appreciate it if people could use their contacts and social media skills to help get the message out to as many potential entrants as possible and we’ll see what happens.
I made a photo documentary covering the making of “Samhradh” which is here on the Forum. Main specs of “Sahmradh” are:
Grand Concert sized, right handed acoustic guitar with 630mm scale length, 13 frets clear of the body and Florentine cutaway. European Spruce top, Bubinga back & sides, Black Limba bindings, end-graft and headstock veneers, b/w/b purflings, mahogany neck with bound ebony fingerboard, Macassar ebony bridge with ebony bridge-pins, and a side soundport. Gotoh tuners with ebony buttons. The guitar comes with a Hiscox Pro II hardcase and will be fitted with a clear mylar pickguard that matches the playing style of the winner and also with a K&K Pure Mini Western pickup:
