Thanks Keith, Colin, Rob and Earthbalm. Seems like deja vu The bridge is carefully positioned on the top and masking tape used to form a “nest”. Two 2mm holes are drilled in the saddle slot through the top so that parts of cocktail sticks can be super glued in to hold the bridge in the correct position whilst gluing: The bridge is then glued on using hot hide glue with the caul to span the fan braces positioned underneath:

More déjà vu – after an interesting half an hour when I remembered why it’s not a good idea to cut the strings tidily at the peghead, “El Xiprer” was strung up again in the white. Sounds just as good with the new bridge: Time to start the finishing . . . or finish the starting

Spray time. The back sides and neck are sprayed with pre-catalysed lacquer. The top will have an oil finish. First lacquer coat on:

How many coats will you apply and how much sanding in between? Looking very nice indeed.

A few more coats on: Earthbalm - it depends Depending on how the first coat goes on I may apply another before starting sanding back, and then generally sand back on every coat after that with 240 or 320 grit sandpaper before spraying a thin final coat and letting it cure. Then it is rubbed back and finished with 0000 wire wool. Generally it's about four coats on the back and sides and three on the top if I'm spraying the top with the pre-cat lacquer.

The top is carefully sanded down and polished with micromesh up to 12000 grit. The first coat of Liberon Finishing oil is then applied. With lacquer the finish is applied to the wood and then the finish levelled and polished. With an oil finish the bare wood is levelled and polished and thin coats wiped onto this. At this stage the lovely silking of the medullary rays on the top shows through:

Looks beautiful Dave, and in far finer fettle than the conifer behind it!
How are you getting on with the friction tuner pegs?

Keith, Thanks. Unfortunately that conifer isn't quite big enough even for a ukulele They aren't friction pegs, they have internal wormed gears and they work pretty well.
