What an extremely attractive piece of wood you've chosen for the back! Gorgeous

I'm on my third variation now ;-) Sounds like the genesis of a great theme and variations piece!

This is going to be a beautiful guitar!! I have decided to formally decline to enter this time despite Colin's very kind offer to reshape the neck in the very unlikely event of me winning. I will however be following it all closely as it unfolds Regards Phil

It really does look beautiful, but I was just about to start recording my entry in earnest when I looked in this thread and realised that as a vegan I can't enter. Shame, but there you go.

It's looking good! I'm on day 1 of composition, but it's been a good day. I've got the bones of something that I think will work. As others have said though, getting away from the Bert version is tough!

The back braces are carved and the centre reinforcing strip added.
Then the braces are inlet to the linings and the back dry fitted to the rims.
Next it'll be bracing the top.

It's time to brace the top, like most builders this is probably my favourite part of building a guitar, it is also the part where the magic happens and the sacrifice of many virgins required to achieve success.
The brace layout is prepared on the plan.
All of my top braces are interconnected, so I have to cut small tenons on the ends of the braces that butt up to the X-brace and of course small mortices on the X. The X is then glued to the top.
I always give the X braces a first profiling, as it's much easier to do the gross carving before the other braces are glued in place. Then the rest of the braces are glued on.
The open upper transverse brace is glued on together with the patches and the padauk bridge plate. Why padauk? It's orange! Then the magic rite of brace carving and brace tuning is done at full moon while standing on one leg and chanting the sacred words passed down by the ancient druidic lyre makers, and a finished top is produced.
Next I'll close the box.

Everything under control as ever and a beautiful job, colins. Don't you get any problems with braces creeping off a couple of millimetres to the side when they are braced into position and the glue is still a lubricant?
