Thanks for those, Martin - good to hear, and well done for getting them done in a limited time!
It sounds like a Taran!
Considering Stoer was capoed at fret 5, the resonance and sustain were really good. The tone on the top strings, esp the open G seems to have something of the metallic timbre that the Road Trip Tirga Beag possessed, which was my least favourite thing about it as a player, though from a listening angle it was not a problem. Nice bottom though!
What's it like for volume and punch whemn compared with your own Blackwood guitar Martin?
Do you think Rory feel he's achieved what he set out to with this guitar?

Interesting comment about the 'metallic' tone, Keith. I think I agree with you somewhat, although I wasn't sure if this was a facet of the string (since they all sounded a bit that way at first), the setup (it needs a little bit more relief I think) or the construction. It's all good feedback anyway for a prototype The volume is quite striking when played hard, but I think a little more relief would enable even more strident playing - I'll have a look at that. Sadly I can't directly compare it to my ABW guitar as Rory borrowed that to let a client have a play on it this week, so I'm bereft until Friday I'm not sure I''m in a position to judge a Dread fully as I don't tend to play in the styles which seem to suit it best - it's going to be a pretty effective strummer and flatpicker I'm sure, but I need to make sure it can do the other stuff well too.

Martin, Many thanks for posting this. Great to get some feed back. The Dread as you say is prototype, not that I scrimped on anything really. Sadly your recording don't work for me here, computers!
Interesting about the strings, they Elixir 13-56 nano PB so that might be where the metallic feel is coming from. I did do the bolt on neck for ease however the next one will be the standard dovetail.
Keith, Good question, I'm happy with the guitar yes. I set out to build a dread that had good treble and a strong (not woofy) bass. I also wanted it to have good separation so that it could be flat picked and strummed. I think it does those things. The next one is Mahogany Adirondack, now that's exciting!!!
Thanks everyone.
All the best,
Rory

Some more recordings. Before you listen, please let me make a few excuses points about these: - I am crap at playing guitar, and I'm also a bit rusty, which makes me doubly crap
- The voice isn't great here, and it's supposed to be a bit in the background, so as not to drown out the guitar sound
- I will never use med/heavy strings again - my fingers are sore and my playing is worse than usual
Okay, now I have made disclaimers, I also want you to know that I do not expect you to listen to any of these, and in fact will not hold it against anyone if you don't. If you only want to listen to the first few seconds, that's fine too. The guitar sounds good, but unfortunately due to the short notice, the recordings aren't polished...at all. The songs/tunes are mercifully short, so don't worry about that. Right. Sorted. Moving on, here are some things I recorded this evening... High Days (Bert Jansch cover) - Standard Tuning, 6th Fret Capo https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-robertson-7/high-daysBlues Run the Game (Jackson C Frank cover) - Standard Tuning, 4th Fret Capo (this one isn't good ) https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-robertson-7/brtgThe Dark Island (Mark Thomson arrangement) - DADGAD, 5th Fret Capo (I'm so sorry Mark ) https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-robertson-7/dark-isleAuld Lang Syne (very short instrumental) - Standard Tuning, 2nd Fret Capo https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-robertson-7/newlangsyneCornball Cheese-fest (no idea what I was thinking here) - Standard Tuning, Open (just to get some strummage) https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-robertson-7/wine-drinkerWell, that's it for now. Apologies again, and if I had a few more weeks to get something down I'm sure it would just make things worse.

No need for all the disclaimers Martin!
High Days sounds great - would never have guessed there was a capo on quite that high. And, despite what you say, nicely played!
Blues run the game - always enjoy hearing you do this one, and again, it's a load better than you obviously think!
Dark Island - that "metallic" thing seems to surface again in places on this one for some reason...Probably just me!
Auld Lang Syne - enjoyed that - not metallic sounding this time - nice.
Wine Drinker - really liked the open strummy sound in the first half of this one especially.
Obviously a v interesting guitar Martin - you're v fortunate being able to explore it!
Thanks for persevering against the technical difficulties earlier in the week, and with the medium strings!
Keith

Thank you very much for listening and giving feedback, Keith! Above and beyond IMO Anyway, it's interesting that you pinpoint the metallic-sound on the two DADGAD tunes, both at the 5th fret. It could just be coincidence, and the fact that I play them with poor technique, but at the very least it will give Rory something to look at when he takes the guitar back tomorrow. I think it sounds pretty good at the 6th fret as well, much nicer than expected at that position, and that has got to be a good sign. I'm also impressed with its strummed tone - I wanted to do something without a capo and with chords, which is why I came up with the old Dean Martin number at short notice I really like its rich, shimmering quality. I also like the way the strings combine to a cohesive wall of sound, rather than a jangly collection of notes which some guitars display when strummed. I didn't anticipate just how the heavier strings would affect my playing, but it seems they have a fair impact. I don't use a plectrum at all on guitar, and if I did I might have appreciated them more. The guitar, although quite large and deep bodied, feels very comfortable to hold. It is maybe a little bigger than my Tirga Beag, and I can feel that in my right arm at times (I have wee arms!!). The neck is a similar profile to my own and feels superb - substantial yet slim and smooth all the way along.

Some great samples there Martin...the guitar seems to be very happy capo'd up high...both "High Days" and the two DAGAD tunes[LS and DI] sound great to my ears...always a sign of a fine sounding instrument IMHO. The contrast in the tone between the two DADGAD tunes [on 5] and High Days [on 6] is interesting ...you wouldn't think it was the same guitar...a slightly warmer sound on HD but I think the tone on capo 5 for the DADGAD tunes suits them very well...maybe you are getting more overtones in that position on the open strings. It would interesting to hear something in standard tuning capo'd on the 5th fret for comparison. The strummed sound without the capo is great...super separation and balance and no boominess [??!] Interesting and enjoyable listening..

Thanks a million for listening to all of that Andrew, and of course for the super feedback! If I get a chance tonight I'll do a recording at the 5th fret in standard, and hopefully you can tell me if it's a position-thing, technique thing or DADGAD thing that's making (any) difference.

My last recording with this fine guitar. I've done one in standard but capo'd at the 5th fret as discussed. https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-robertson-7/braw-sailing-on-the-seaAnd another pic :

Didn't know the song Martin, but enjoyed it. Didn't think the "metallic" thing that keeps bugging me was especially present at all there. Liked the guitar sound a lot, and despite fret 5 capo and "proper" tuning ( ) it still seemed resonant and sustaining - a good crisp and clear underpinning for your warm vocal. Well done for getting another one in! Keith

Really enjoyed listening to them Martin. "High Days" is my favourite, your playing is top - you sound very much like Bert as well, many people would love to have your voice, we should hear more of it.
The guitar sounds stellar on all pieces - where's it going once Rory picks it up.

Thanks very much for listening Jonny, and for your very generous comments! I'm not sure exactly where it is going after me, but I suspect it will be to another player for evaluation

"Braw sailing in on the Sea" is my favourite track on Kris Drever's excellent Black Water album...never heard it anywhere else before..a fine version I think the Taran has a bit of a sweet spot when capo'd on the 5th fret...I thought BSOTS sounded similar in tone to the DADGAD tunes but with a bit less sustain and fewer overtones possibly due to having fewer "open" strings being played at the same time...still sounded excellent though! This has been a really interesting thread...looks like you are now Taran tester in chief...an enviable position to hold!
