Back at the New Theatre again last night for a recital by a recent Nobel laureate I have heard very mixed reviews... Well it was Bob so you didn’t get much in the way of interaction with the crowd . Took them a song or so to get the vocals high enough up in the mix but once they sorted that out it was a great gig. Even my wife, who’s not a fan, enjoyed it. The set was dominated by the new album and the older songs were generally less famous ones. So if you don’t like the new album or wanted a greatest hits show you’d have been disappointed. But the band was tight, and his half-spoken, half-sung delivery was great. We were lucky to see him in a small (1800 seat venue) don’t think it would work so well in an arena.

There is a venue that seems little known outside of its immediate area called the Ropewalk. It's an old rope making factory in Barton on Humber, across the bridge from Hull. There is music on three nights in the next week. It is a small venue (at a guess, no more than 150), good sound, gets some excellent acts, many of which are acoustic and of various genres. It has a bar and good free car parking. Most of the people working there are volunteers. The link below. roperyhall.co.uk

The bloody brilliant Nick Hart - who might be described as a multi-instrumentalist heir to Martin Carthy - is on tour. nickhartmusic.com/showsOf interest to me are the two London dates: Walthamstow Folk Club on Sun Feb 26 and Goose Is Out Folk Club on Fri March 31.

SIMON KEMPSTON - 18th Feb 2023 Barton on Humber Scottish singer-songwriter and leading acoustic fingerstyle guitarist Simon Kempston has toured the world performing his highly original, contemporary acoustic folk/blues songs and music, and is a unique talent. His beautifully crafted folk-tinged material showcases his incredible, distinctive and intricate finger style guitar work – an exciting blend of the folk-baroque, blues and classical styles, and is gently nuanced, compelling tenor vocals. An inspiring, poetic lyricist, Simon’s live performances are intense and impassioned, the subject matter chiefly Scottish, yet with universal appeal. This first time Barton-upon-Humber concert is not to be missed. roperyhall.co.uk/2022/11/21/simon-kempston/

The Honeybees (Odette Michell, Amy Goddard and Zoё Wren) are at Grayshott Folk Club on Feb 24th. I'd not heard of them, but from what I've found digging around on the net it sounds worth going to.
(If you're going, let me know so I can say 'hi!')

Anyone who likes Ralph McTell and can get to South London in May... he's doing 5 nights at the Half Moon to celebrate their 60th anniversary as a music venue. On one of the evenings he's going to playing through the songs on two of his (IMHO) best albums: "Easy" and "Not Till Tomorrow".
I already have my tickets! (And if anyone here decides to go, message me - it would be great to say hi)

I know people who go to these festivals and rave about them but have never done so myself. But, on the spur of the moment (VERY unusual for me!) we've just booked to go, as we will be needing a holiday away later this year. 6 days of pure folk music enjoyment with Ralph, Show of Hands, Wishbone Ash, Smith and Brewer and loads more. Here's the link for anyone interested and who needs a bit of sun and music in Autumn. www.costafestival.co.uk/costa-festival-portugal/

The Fox and Pelican in Grayshott, Surrey, will be holding their first acoustic music evening from 8.00pm until -10.00pm on Tuesday 11th April. This will be very informal, with no amplification or 'time solts'. If you know the song or tune, just join in! Or not, as the fancy takes you! Audience also welcome! If you would like any further details, feel free to contact me.

Tuesdays are a bit difficult right now, but I'll definitely come down when things settle down a bit.

Big night coming this week... well, a small night for mankind but a big night for me. It's my "pacemaker delayed" first ever full solo gig. About 2014 I started to play a few open-mics - just me and my acoustic and a thumb-pick. I'd played in bands for thirty odd years and done hundreds of gigs, including some pretty big ones, but this was the beginning of an idea to eventually go out there solo. So some open mics, and then some third-on-the-bill solo sets, a few support gigs, a couple of duo gigs that featured solo sets, and so on. All in all, I've done 20+ acoustic gigs, gradually building up confidence, repertoire, chops, and so on. Wednesday is my first proper gig when I'm I'm on my own, all night, in a pub, and everything entertainment-wise is down to me. I've been - and still am - umming and ahhing about my future in this respect. If it goes well there are a few other establishments I might try and get a gig in. If it goes down like a lead-balloon then there will be my answer! I will still have the other project, the gypsy-jazz duo, to fall back on. I shall report back Thursday...

Best of luck, Derek. Secretly I'd love to have a go at gigging too, but get the fear if I catch the cat watching me sing. Fair play to you
