Is it the music stand or the debate that's dreaded? Vinny

Congrats fellow Guild owner. I took delivery of a D40 Bluegrass model two weeks ago. Nicely balanced guitars.
Enjoy,

Another vote for elixir phosphor bronze here. Don’t like D’Addario or Martin. Not penny pinching as Elixir more expensive, though they do last longer. Probably because I remove other strings due to wanting to replace them with elixir. All in the ear of the beholder I suppose. Vinny

I’ve had two. One a basic starter, the other an all solid Cort custom shop jumbo Engelman Indian Rosewood. The basic ones are similar to Tanglewood in many respects. The custom is very well made with very nice woods. My son now owns both, one a beater and the other to keep him away from my guitars. I couldn’t justify selling as resale wouldn’t be great and anyway they’re good guitars. The custom shop I kept over a high end Freshman, FA400D which I traded. Vinny

Some machine heads weight, or lack of, can affect tone. I’m not sure how much but you obviously noticed it! Incidentally, I had a Tacoma built Guild D55 which was very headstock heavy but now have a New Hartford model which is much lighter and better balanced, physically and tonally. The tone is not as bass heavy as the old one but I obviously can’t say if it’s down to lighter open gear machine heads as the whole guitar is lighter. I have a Yamaha NCX1200 R and it’s very good, well made and sounds great. The spruce top is perhaps less warm than the typical cedar classical and I find the classical neck a bit chunky as it’s my first nylon string guitar, my limited ability the real issue. The pickup system is an excellent reproduction of the acoustic sound. I think the NCX700 has the same pickup. Vinny

I’m really enjoying the cd. I haven’t attempted to play any of the lovely tunes yet though. My only complaint is that the recordings have given me a hankering for one of Dave’s guitars. The depth of tone is amazing. His playing isn’t too shabby either I suppose! Vinny.

Think I saw that documentary, Stanley. It was called The Hitmaker if memory serves.

Thanks Amit. I was hoping to avoid the external preamp if I could. A friend of mine rewired a rare earth humbucker and used a nine volt battery instead of coin cells. I thought he'd fry it but he said it gave a hotter signal. Vinny

Thanks riverman. I've used pure mini pickups with the pure xlr preamp or the baggs para di when using an aer alpha or going to a p.a. but since I got the acousticube I haven't needed a preamp as it's preamp is so good. Thanks for advice. I'm tempted. Vinny

Thanks Andy. Do you mean an external preamp or the one in the pickup? Vinny

I've fitted a few using exact same method as Keith. Brazilian rosewood jig too posh for me! The last one I installed didn't come with glue and you apparently have to use the right type. I put one in a jumbo Lowden (pinless bridge so drilled as per Keith's instuctions) but it never sounded great. I have never attempted removal. One I put in a Jumbo Guild is quite good and one in an Avalon auditorium is really good. I'm now tempted by the recommendations for the rare earth blend. Does the mic have such a big influence? I have a Guild dread with D-TAR pickup with mic and the mic is feedback prone.

I have a Yamaha NCX 1200R (pickup is System61 2way A.R.T.) and the amplified sound is really good, very true representation of the acoustic tone. It goes through batteries fairly quickly but otherwise it's excellent. I run it through an Aer Acousticube.

I can heartily recommend this disc. The tunes are beautiful and played with great sensitivity. Well done Phil, and thank you. Vinny
