I'm 67, I've written two songs. One is OKish (someone asked for the words/chords and they now sing it) The other song is not so good. Basically I'm lazy, it is a matter of time and focus for me. It is too easy to think of all the great songs already out there and think "Why bother?". I once saw a documentary about the Brill Building songwriting 'factory' in New York in the 50's and 60's. The songwriters there worked office hours and produced some of the great 20th century songs. Perhaps that is the kind of shove I need if I am to write anything more that is of value. The 'value' bit is very pertinent as a serious amount of self-criticism is required or someone you can trust to bounce your songs off and get an honest appraisal. You often come across 'Bar' songs. This is when someone says "and now I'm going to sing one of my own" and you take the opportunity to go to the bar because you have heard them before....

It is believed that Ms Briggs was the inspiration for "Beeswing" by R Thompson.

I played in a band last Sunday evening, outdoors. One mic to sing into, one mic to play into. Is a plugged-in acoustic guitar an electric guitar with a soundbox?

Yup, I'm with Dobro on this. Get a riser to fit over the nut and get sliding! I did this with an old spanish built classical style guitar. It had however always had a tailpiece and steel strings from new.

Nice mix FFJ! Mrs S wanted to see Barbara Dickson at The Platform, Morecambe a few weeks ago so I went with her with a thought that BD had a folkie background. I was right in thinking this as she did plenty of guitar backed stuff and is a decent player and can still sing really well. It is good if you have more than one venue locally then the chances of seeing good acts is upped. I only go to smallish venues though.

The Faiths I have tried have been very good instruments. I wanted to avoid saying "for the money" because they are just good, full stop! I am however baffled by the pricing of their Signature specials. They seem to be about three times the price of standard models and the sort of price you could pay a British guitar builder to make a nice instrument and you could have some input and probably a better sell-on value. Do Faith actually sell any?

Saw, heard and enjoyed his playing many a time. A great influence on the folk scene. We had a "round" of Swarb compositions/arrangements at a session last night.

Some years ago I had an old, basic, Yamaha dread that was not being used. I gave it to the teenage son of a friend who was beginning his guitar 'career'. He subsequently obtained employment in a music shop. When I needed to buy a new set of tuning heads for another guitar he got me a good deal and the shop techie fitted them too. What goes around.....

Loved the whole thing. A really clever virtual tour with great music. The tune you played is used by many North-west morris sides. The title always amused me and made me think -- "Ah, Rochdale, the swaying palms, the coconuts, the hula girls, err.... the Pennine gales"

This Broke Taw would have to be VERY cheap to be a worthwhile fix.

I had an unbranded "clothes peg" sprung type that looked a bit like a Kyser but wasn't a Kyser. It had to be removed from the guitar very carefully or there was a danger of damage to the back of the neck. Now I have a G7th squeeze-shut type, this has worked brilliantly. I only got it because Acoustic Magazine were offering one 'free' if you took out an annual sub'. The sub' was £41.99 the capo sold for £29.99 at that time so the mag was £1 an issue. Nearly worth it?

Martin you should try a visit to the Red Rose city of Lancaster. There is a very active live music scene most noteably at the Golden Lion, Stonewell Tavern, Ye Olde John o'Gaunt and The Robert Gillow. The Robert Gillow has all sorts of live music including a large percentage of acoustic stuff. Tomorrow 14/04/16 at lunchtime they have "The Young 'uns" performing a one hour spot. Not bad for the price of a pint? The rather good Promenade Music is within three miles at Morecambe (on the Prom!). Last time I was in they had a playable second hand guitar at £35. Their prices range from that to 'How much have you got?'
