Just to add I also agree with Martin, as you do really need to be able to sing the song freely too...

Hello Jack,
Some one gave me some help a few years ago, he was a drummer, who's name I can't remember - sorry- but it was at the Tilsone Music Club, in Cheshire. He could obviously hear/ feel when the songs were off and /or bars for example were being extended or shortened .
The idea is to play the guitar part and at the same time sing or recite a times table. This helps to diassociate the words of the song from the music.
Like everything it might seems difficult at 1st, but it could well help in the long run.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hello there,
just to add that this seems to be linked to the "does size matter" debate. I'm right over in the it doesn't corner: all of the things we tend to see as gifts or attributes can be improved and extended by practice, and focused determination to reach a goal. Thats' how tennis players , football players and musicians all do it. For the "great unfocused" like us, it's hard to realise , just how determined and how much of the right practice you need to do to be an athlete for example.
Tom hess covers all this stuff in his article in a quite definable way.
I 'm convinced this is a good thing and it makes everything possible, but sometimes in our lives we tend to get pigeonholed and unencouraged from pursuing possibilities. And there's always those blinkin distractions- beer, television, forums...
Hey ho Peter

Hello Martin,
I've send a guitar a couple of times to Fylde, for a refret , and Roger Bucknall always suggests Interlink. They do seem to be changing their terms a bit, and it might be worth ringing tour local office, but insurance was just an addable extra.
Hope that helps, regards Peter

Hello Phil,
That's a very useful list, and nicely put.
I've printed it off, and the only thing I needed to add for myself was "always use a metronome " !
Thanks then
Peter

Having played for 40 years with relatively small progress, actualy due to a dislike of metronomes, and a misplaced idea that some people are gifted, but having done some Open University work, I know that anyone can get better at anything. I realise that that maybe subjective... Anyway in an attempt to stay focused...there's a very useful article by a bloke called Tom Hess, that I found thru' Folk Radio Link - on this forum somewhere - on www. wholenote.com, called "Why Aren't you a Better Guitarist?" and this will be of use to all of us who flip from from piece to piece with gay abandon! Best regs Peter.

Hello Calv, there are definately do-able exercises that will help, and can benefit all the similar problems, like house maids knee and beer drinkers elbow.... My wife types alot and she use very similar ones to mine that just stretch the tendons that are painful. I think there was some stuff in the mag and maybe other sources around and about.
Like Martin, I'll have alook too.
Kind regs again , Peter

Hello Calv, it might depend on what music you'd feel ok playing, but I know that Michael Raven had loads of graded music books and some that where all easy , and all with tab and music notation. I think you can get them from his wife now.
If you can't find a link I've got a phone no. and address in a catologue.
Hope that might help, best regs Peter

Hello there, after a few weeks this is my first post. I like to read what's being said, but don't always feel that I can add anything.
I also look at the L'arrivee forum, and that relies quite heavily on a few regular posters too, but they do have quite a few "newbies." There's often technical questions, eg about set ups, and strings, that seems to get others involved. There are some other ideas too, like :what are you reading, or where to try/buy studff
I know this might be the wrong place to say so BUT , I did enjoy all of the R T concert, and the whole band and guests seemed up for it, and that drummer seems important and enthusiastic but somehow leaves a it all feeling balanced.
Enough said for me, Bye for now kind regs Peter
