Hello All,
Just wondered, did anyone see that documentary last Monday?
It was all about Teflon and other related floropolymers that are also used for coating guitar strings : they seem too hang on in the environment - including people - and be dangerous to health.
Might help influence whether you should use them at all, and I'm a fan of Cleartone and Elixir up too now that is.
If you didn't see it I think some some newspaper's covered it.
Best regards
Peter H

Hello Bleatoid,
Just to sound a bit serious for a moment...I think anything can be use d as a practice piece...you just focus right on to the bits that give you the most difficulty/pain.
I've been playing for many many years self taught, and largely because of the thread /blogg mentioned above, I've just started lessons with Jonny Moss, and he can teach any style .
So someone just like him perhaps ... will help you focus , practice and improve ...
Your better half sounds like a good role model!
Best regards,
another Peter

Hello all,
I use this for my Planet waves picks, but it will work for any plastic pick.
Drop it in a cup of hot water, leave to warm up, say a minute or so,then fit it on yer thumb, and cool it down with cold water, whilst still on thumb.....
(Sorry I can't remember who told me this way)
Good luck regards etc Peter

I'm no expert but I thought "road worn " guitars were worth a premium, just give it a good clean and resell it! kind regs Peter

Lots of good debate here , having seen John Renbourne about 10 years ago, use his music and a stand, I've felt ok about anyone else too! Folk clubs need performers, what ever they use, and there is growing evidence that the songs we sing are all the product of classical/ stage music, whether penned today or days ago..so learn it if you can, but p[lay it whatever... If you play an electric guitar you'd defintely have them and probabley use them.
As a fairly recent user of an electric, and a used Fender amp, the sounds are intresting in their own right...but I'm not sure that they will be inspiring for everyone.
Having the chance to try something is of course the best option, as ever...
Not very helpful, but I feel better for saying it !

I'm not sure about heavy strings, but a year ago I put Elixirs 80/20's on my Larrivee by mistake, but it really sounded and felt better, more relaxed and with more zingy and reverby...
I've experimented with others and like yamahas and newtones nearly as much.
The trouble is it is really difficult to cover all the bases , and so I've not tried different gauges, or monels or...
Keep testing Peter

Well I must say I'm a bit surprised to hear who has difficulties with this, although losing your way I think happens to everyone I've ever seen.
But I do remember reading somewhere that you've got to know the the song as story, and sing it say 50 times without any music.
Might help... Regs Peter

I know the problem with this thread , it's a bit like what strings!!
And for it's worth I was fan of Fred Kelly , BUT now I'm recent convert to Planet waves, thumbpicks and nylon plectrums.
The thumb picks sound more like my finger nails to me that is...
Nationals fit the best to start with, but don[t sound quite right, so i use the warm water trick with planet waves.
Just more to think about Best regs Peter

Here's another idea:
For what's worth I came across a pre owned Trace Elliot TA 40, and that's a clean sound , works fine and is more than too good enough for the just home use I give it , but it lets you practice using live sound and it has all the usual ins and outs.....
