I’ve got a couple - a WL-14 and a WL-S, both ladder braced. They sound wonderful, record fabulously and feel great. I’ve never found a better fit for me. Just had some new pickups installed in mine, thumbs up so far! IMG_1870 by Amit Dattani, on Flickr

She’s fab, and she’s on tour in April too, I’m seeing her play in a library in Bearwood!

Congratulations on your second Waterloo Amit. I have also 2 Waterloo’s a ladder braced WL14 that lives in Open C and a WL K . I’ve sold a few guitars over the past few years but those are going nowhere. My WL14 was one of the first 2 brought into Australia in 2014, and it opened up really quick. The WLK is so light. I don’t think either are niche guitars they cover lots of styles. I just need to try a Collings Julian Lage OM which I think has the same glue and finish as the Waterloo’s. The videos on the Waterloo website are worth watching.. That Julian Lage OM sounds incredible! I managed to get my hands on a WL-K sometime last year. Unbelievably light aren’t they? And again so playable. Good to meet a fellow Waterloo-er!

Yep I recently caught a James Elkington video where he was using one, really impressive stuff. There’s a cool Julian Lage vid doing the rounds too where he uses one to great effect. Super comfortable too! Just listening to your track Santiago and think it's a pretty good advert for the Waterloo sound itself! Sounds great Ah thanks man! It’s in open C on that one, they sound extra sweet in open tunings.

Again, I’m probably biased, but the WL-14 is fab, it’s the only guitar I used for a recent solo album. I reckon it’s more versatile than it first appears, buy buy buy I started to get interested in one when I saw that James Elkington is using one and his album from last year is one of my favourites already - the album was recorded with a 30s Gibson L-00 at wilco's loft studio but when James couldn't afford to buy the guitar off of Jeff Tweedy, Jeff apparently told him to buy a Waterloo and that's what he's been using since... Coda Music had a second hand one for £1600 recently that I was seriously tempted by but I only just bought my Lowden in October!! Cool - I quite fancy one of the WL-14 but I really need to stop buying guitars for a year or two!! Again, I’m probably biased, but the WL-14 is fab, it’s the only guitar I used for a recent solo album. I reckon it’s more versatile than it first appears, buy buy buy

I may be biased - but they're the mutts nuts. I do like a good technical term. I played one of these (or at least a ladder braced something) a year or so ago - great fun. Fun is definitely the right word. Fab articulation, and the lack of too many overtones definitely helps me when singing. Love them.

Bit late, but I got a great deal on a Waterloo WL-S Deluxe. I've been on the lookout for one of these for a while now, I own another Waterloo and use it as my main guitar, and was after another to use in open tunings for gigs. The string spacing etc is the same on both so it's easy for me to alternate. These are pretty rare on these shores, so I jumped on it when it cropped up, and managed to sell one of my guitars to fund it. It sounds wonderfully rich, considering it's ladder braced, it's got a depth that just doesn't make sense - a really sweet little guitar, and a fantastic pairing with my existing Waterloo. I'm chuffed. Here's couple of pics: fullsizeoutput_72a by Amit Dattani, on Flickr And one of them both together: IMG_1870 by Amit Dattani, on Flickr

I'll second Martin's mention of the Deering Goodtime series, I recently picked up an 'Americana' version of their open back Goodtime banjo, it's got a 12 inch head so is a little warmer and fuller, really comfortable and resonant.

I've always used them, like you I'm not necessarily after a natural sound (though I do have a mic built into the pickup to provide a bit more 'air'). I like the punch and attach, which works better for how I play. I've used an M1, and currently use a Fishman Rare Earth Blend, I've toyed with the idea of trying other things, but I'm still pretty happy with this setup. It cuts through, doesn't feed back, and sounds good to my ears, particularly with the mic blended in.
